12 weeks

One of my friends has just reached the 12-week mark in her pregnancy. In the old days, I would have assumed that that meant that everything was going to be just fine. And it probably will. Still, I remember my own "perfect" 12-week ultrasound and can't stop holding my breath.

I constantly bite my tongue when people act like getting pregnant or getting past the 12 week mark means a live baby. I don't want to freak them out, but I can't listen to them and say nothing sometimes.

I also cringe when I hear about a pregnancy publicly anytime in the first trimester. But what does it help to say something? Either the pregnancy will proceed without incident or it won't, and pregnant women absorb so many horror stories.

That's exactly what it sounds like, the silence of holding your breath.

Unfortunately the only guarentee is that there is no guarentee. I am amazed any of us are here when I think of everything that has to happen percisely in order for a child to be born.

I never say anything. But I think that while they're unrealistically optimistic, my bad experience has made me unrealistically pessimistic.

For the most part their clueless confidence turns out to be justified.
