why i'm leaving early
Although I work in a fairly new and extraordinarily expensive building, something is always going wrong. The problem of the day is that my office – and only my office – has the heat cranked up about as high as it can go. And the heating system is centrally controlled, which means that I have to wait for building management to do something about it. And the outside temperature is rapidly climbing into the 80s. And the windows don’t open.
I’m trying to think of it as a free sauna, but so far that’s not exactly working for me.

Oh that sounds like hell. As for being a free sauna, maybe if you could strip naked, but I doubt that's acceptable in your office.
When I was teaching, I used to work in a building like that, minus the new part. Usually it was cold: my classroom would be 61 degrees for weeks on end--I kept a cardigan at work, but teenagers aren't so practical at equipping themselves for indoor weather. When it wasn't in use I sometimes held class in the cafeteria so my kids wouldn't freeze.
Yikes! I would be outta there too.
Speaking of adverse conditions, in the TPR trial I was observing yesterday, it was the temperature of a meatlocker. My fingers were actually shriveling and the nails were turning purple... Definitely takes the mind off the task at hand.
I would be gone so fast I was just a blur. Hope they get it fixed soon. Well not to soon so you can have some more time off.
That's awful. Frankly, I think it's just wrong that buildings don't have operable windows. And it's not like it's not possible - the new Federal office building in San Francisco has windows that open - in a brand new, expensive building.
I agree, Magpie. I miss windows that open. I suppose it's supposed to be about energy efficiency, but then why do I always need to wear a sweater in the summer and a tank top in the winter?
You could come over here for the cool-off after the sauna. My lab is in the cellar, and it was much too cold last summer so that I always wore long pants and sleeves. The hotter it got outside, the cooler in here. So far it is not so bad this year, but it hasn't been very hot yet, thus I'm not sure they have fixed the problem. Hope they do fix yours soon.
Yuck. I am heat-averse. Just yuck.
Take a fan to work, wear as little as possible and drink lots of fluid....oh and complain like hell because thats what it feels like.
BTW: Did you accidentally not allow for comments on your June 6th post?
