the cutting edge
I have to admit that I'm kind of a luddite. Though I draw the line at actually destroying machinery, I can't say that I exactly embrace new (or even not-so-new) technology. In fact, I tend to pretty much ignore it. I don't own a microwave. I can't understand the point of TiVo or HDTV. Though I have a cell phone and an iPod, I almost never turn either of them on. Until a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of a Wii.
But I'm making a concerted effort to open my mind to new vistas. So, tell me, what's your absolute favorite, can't-live-without gadget?

Tivo. Though when we moved we switched from cable to satellite, so we have our provider's DVR, which is nowhere near as good. Tivo changed the way I watch TV. So much more efficient. But, I think you have to experience it to really understand...
As embarrassing as this is to admit, I'm a 35 year old woman, and I am hopelessly addicted to my cotton-candy-pink Nintendo DS Lite. I think it's like my own little pink crack cocaine, with graphics.

i like technology in general, in the sense that i'm interested in it and the effects it has on the societies it infiltrates, but i'm not much of an actual adopter of the gadgets. i don't absorb them into my routine well...and i get frustrated by how they become obsolete before i've justified paying for them in my own weird little mind.
though Dave just explained Wii to me the other day and i thought it sounded neat, for sure.
but my favourite, can't-live-without is simple...just my computer. computers, rather. with internet. gimme some version of that and the tv and tivo and ipod can all go out the window.
hence, i am beginning to cultivate a minor lust for the portability of the iphone and its portable internettiness...but i never remember to charge the useless, ancient cell phone i already have.
i'm a luddite too.
we do have a microwave, but only because my FIL couldn't bear that we didn't and bought it for us;
we do have a DVD player, but only because my brother couldn't bear that we didn't and bought it for us.
we purchased our first ipod three weeks ago, and it's fine, i suppose. but i'm not particularly attached to it.
i guess i'll echo bon -- the plain old computer w/internet access.
Uh, the dishwasher? That's not a gadget I suppose so I'll have to say my laptop and flashdrive. We had to get a new TV recently that would better accommodate Josh's films and the flatscreens (not the totally flat tvs though) were just as expensive as the old kind so we got one of those. I like it but have been kind of embarrassed by it when guests come by.
I'm not huge on technology either but my DH lives for it. He bought me a Palm Pilot once and I hated it and went back to my regular daytimer I can write stuff in. My DH always needs to have the latest new gadgets. I know he can not live without his blackberry, PSP and he absolutely loves the Wii. He lined up to get one and its a fun because its something the whole family can play - even my parents were into it. LOL I'm not a video gamer but I do find the Wii a lot of fun.
For me.. I absolutely love our version of Tivo (I'm in Canada)and HDTV.. :) :) Watching my favorite shows is on my time now and I never watch shows in real time anymore (and I don't have to waste my time watching commercials anymore). SO I love it. I used to be like you and the only reason we got it is because DH got it for free and he wanted it so badly. But I just love it now. You won't understand until you try it and you'll realize how great it is. You can record more than two shows at once. I can even pause a show in real time and come back to it or just press record. And anything I watch in HD is so much more clearer. And once you get used to HD other regular channels literally start looking fuzzy to me.
I actually don't have a TV either, and ignore my cell phone mostly. I have a MacBook Pro that I adore, and I take my iPod with me EVERYWHERE. It became a thing of necessity to block out urban city sounds and ensuring that I don't have to listen to hours of mindless blather during my daily commutes. The solitaire feature is also nice.
I love my laptop and the docking station that allows me to use it so easily and portably at work. But I am not working right now, so I would have to say that I love my Angel Care monitor and my video monitor (yes, BB has two different monitors in his room - different uses, you see). Never leave home without them when travelling.
Well, I am not much for technology either. You would laugh if I told you how long it took me to switch from audio tapes to CDS. My car still has a tape player.
Lets see, I have an Ipod, but I have had it for 2 years and still only have like 200 songs on it, most of which my husband actually put on.
Okay, I am still thinking. I love the internet, but in terms of "gadget" can I say my digital camera? Its a fairly cheap one, but I love, love, love that you can see your pics right away and see if you need another shot. I love, love, love, that you need only print the ones you really want. Now, having said, I have to admit I probably barely know the poor cameras uses. It probably has a lot of neat features that I have not taken the time to find out about.
My laptop and new digital camera.
My laptop -- and since I spend the whole day working with a computer I'm often glad to concentrate on non-technical things in my free time. The iPod is an exception, though ;)
If the laptop counts as a "gadget", then I can't live without that. If not, then TIVO. I cannot stand to sit through commericals so I just record what I want to watch and start it about twenty minutes after the program begins. Then I fast forward through all the commericals. Not only do I feel I get back 15 minutes back on my life on an hour show, I don't have to be a victim to the out of control consumersim. I can stick it to the man. Now if I could just avoid that insidious "product placement"..
Like you I could do with out all the Tech. stuff. I have a cell phone but don't carry it around unless I am reminded to. Don't own an iPod or TiVo or anything like that. But I will say I have heard of the Wii and it does look like something I might like.
My laptop. But I never want to go back to living without a dishwasher again, either.
I really like my IPod and my cell phone, but only because my OB and other docs are programmed into it (no more searching around for numbers), and they can call me right back with test results.
I also like my $15.99 pedometer, because I am trying to walk 10,000 steps a day and it is fun to see how the steps add (or don't add) up. I thought I was walking a lot, but I really was not.
My mobile phone which is camera, MP3 player, palm pilot and phone in one.
TIVO! I am a voracious, shameless little hussy for my TIVO! It's changed the way I watch everything, even life. When things go wrong oh so very wrong (in life), I keep reaching for that "back" button, but it's not there, dammit!
I'm sort of a luddite - I still keep a paper calendar and address book - two calendars if you count the one on the fridge. But I do love my MacBook and my (first generation) iPod.
If I watched more tv, I'd probably like TiVo. But the last time I turned on the set was, oh, maybe a month ago, when I watched three back-to-back episodes of Flip This House.
I don't exactly dislike tv. It just doesn't seem worth the effort to actually go into the tv room and turn the tv on and flip through the channels and sit on the couch watching it. Now that I think about it, I'm probably one of the few people too lazy to watch tv.
I do like commercials though. Maybe I could use TiVo to eliminate the programs and just watch the ads.
I truly couldn't live without my TiVo. I watch WAY too much tv. I used to set up both VCRs in the house to record all my shows. When it was time to watch them I had either missed something or ended too early OR the tape ran out. Now with TiVo I can record 2 shows and watch another show that is recorded while recording. The pausing and rewinding feature is the best! When your husband won't stop talking you can pause, ask him to leave, and rewind.
My iPod is my other fave! I love music too. It keeps it all right there organized in a little box that I can carry around. I even use it in my classroom to have different playlists. My kids LOVE IT!
i used to be a luddite, but i kind of reversed as i almost took it on as a stand and started to sound preachy about it.
Anyway, i love my dorky gps tracker for running. LOVE IT!
TiVo. Without a doubt. There's a reason everyone's so rabid about it, and that reason is WONDERFULNESS.
Mine's not exactly state of the art, but I'd have to rate my toasted sandwich maker in there amongst the highrollers he he.
I'm pretty gadget free, but this is mostly due to budget. I would so get TiVO, an iPod and a Wii if I had money to burn. but I don't, so we eat instead. ;)
From a guy's perspective, this is the first house we have lived in with a garbage disposal in the sink (pretty neat) and a garage door opener - both of these gadgets I use daily and make life a little easier but then I couldn't tell you all this without a computer with internet connection :)
I don't know. As you asked this question, I felt that there was something that I loved, loved, loved, but couldn't remember it. I think maybe it was my pedometer, but I accidentally flushed it long ago. I really like my air compressor that automatically shuts off at the correct psi. Anyone got a flat?
My new iPhone is pretty damn cool.
But I am going to have to go with TIVO. Not having to sit through commercials is pretty great.
I'm definitely in the lingering-Luddite camp. If I don't count computers or my new wireless adaptor, then I guess I'm left with kitchen devices. And there I would have to say my citrus reamer--I have the super-duper kind that works with a lever and it definitely improves my quality of life.
Or my washing machine. My dryer I could do without in a pinch, but there is no laundromat anywhere nearby.
