i'll never come back again

To understand where I'm coming from on this, you need to know that a long, long time ago, at my old job, there was a frighteningly well-equipped gym in the basement, with step aerobics classes and interval training and a weight room. I used to work out twice a day, once before work and once after work. I'd stand in the front row and, because I knew the sequence of moves so well, I focused all my attention on pushing myself as hard as I possibly could. And after every class, the instructor would dim the lights and we'd be lying on the floor, stretching, our eyes closed, our heartrates slowing, our breathing gradually evening out, and the same song would always be playing in the background, so softly that we had to strain to hear the lyrics.

And, yeah, that feeling of redemption never did do much for me.

I wasn't even in this country yet for this song. :) And I've never heard it before. I learn something new every day.

Damn, did that say 1989? How old are you? Just kidding. That's not a song I know. It seems an oddly up-tempo choice for an aerobic cool down.

Julia, Furrow: Yes, I must confess that, in fact, I am old. Really, really, really old. Like, I mean, ancient. Can you say "an-te-di-lu-vi-an?" Thought you could.

hey, fellow protohuman from the dark ages...

this was a weird flashback. i've always liked the richness of her voice, but the poppiness just makes me cringe.

that and the hair. and the outfits.

must go cleanse.

Ooh, step aerobics! When I was here before for my MS there were step aerobics classes EVerywhere all over campus, most taught/led by way-too-chirpy undergrads. Now all the fitness classes are either yoga, pilates, or some combination thereof, taught by intensely serious professionals.

Twice a day???? Good god woman, you do push yourself hard.

That is a woman? She has a very low voice (not that there is anything wrong with that). Either that or it is a man with amazing bone structure and gorgeous hair.

I have never heard that song before.

Niobe -- You are a master of esoteric, little-used S.A.T.-quality words like "antediluvian." Bravo! MC

Wooooooooo, who is that? I am waaaay out of the loop..I've never heard of it.
I can't imagine working out twice a day. That says a lot about you.

elizabeth, christina: Note how I said used to work out twice a day. "Used to" as in past tense. In this case, very, very past tense.

Mostly what it says about me is I'm kind of obsessive and that I had no life. These days, I'm doing well if I work out twice a week.

yeah, that twice a day thing is mindboggling - "used to" or not. I've always wondered who those people were. You, apparently. :)

I'll admit it, I am a lurker on your blog. I am older than dirt too and I definitely remember that song. Hearing it brings back a lot of memories. It feels like 2 lifetimes ago.

stat763: Thanks for delurking. And for saying that the song brings back memories for you too.

My husband likes Tanita Tikaram. I'd never actually seen her before or heard this song. I wonder why the instructor always played this one. Maybe it's the perfect length for your heart rate to return to normal? Or maybe the teacher had a crush.

The twice-a-day thing, well. That's something else. I personally hated step aerobics, and I hate working out in mirrored rooms with strangers, so I admire your fortitude. But I'm glad you stopped.
