abandon hope

Many thanks to everyone who commented or emailed me about The Post That Vanished. Especially Clarissa. Always Clarissa. After much thought and discusion, we’ve decided not to go ahead with it. Other people might reasonably reach a different conclusion, but for me it felt a little too much like selling my soul. And, as someone else said recently, we all know how well that worked out for Faust.

To expand a little on subject of souls, if you’re pretty much a take-no-thought-for-the-morrow kind of girl and the chief barrier to your closing the deal with the guy with the cloven hooves is finding a suitable crossroads or drawing a recognizable pentagram, here are a couple of convenient online options you might want to consider.

My only suggestion is that before signing anything you study Dante’s Divine Comedy carefully, with particular attention to the Inferno section. Or take this cool virtual tour* of the circles of hell and try to figure out which one you’ll be consigned to for all eternity.

*Or this quiz. I haven’t tried it, but you might like to. I took the quiz. Two words. Eighth circle.

Even though it vanished, it did still show up in my Bloglines. I heartily commend your decision not to go with her.

Aww, it's gone before I can comment! I did read it this morning, and you seem at peace with your decision. I think it's the right decision too and I am sure that it will work out for you. I have no doubt.

I had no idea you could sell your soul on-line.

I'm not sure what it is you have decided not to do, but, I'm certain if it felt like a Faustian bargain, you made the right choice.

damn! i already sold my soul to another satan web site!

i think she would have, in theory, of course...gotten on your nerves.

oneliner/christina: I think ''damn" is exactly the right word under the circumstances.

I hope that you are able to find someone else quickly.

I'm in Limbo.

And a little disappointed about it.

apparently (according to the quiz) i am a virtuous non-believer who will end up in the first level of hell, limbo. i'll at least have good company--virgil and aristotle.

I have no idea what is going on but I wish you well.

I'm in the sixth level of hell!

I will be in the second level of hell. Oh well.

I saw the vanishing post on bloglines. I would steer clear.

I'm happy you decided what you did.

I missed the missing post, but in making decisions, go with what feels right. And I am so glad I took the quiz. I may be the only person to be happy to be in limbo. First, my company is Socrates and Aristotle. For a philosophy major, I couldn't hope for better. Secondly, the part about unbaptized babies got me because we didn't baptize Jimmy (we aren't religious). So yea!!!! Happy to be in Limbo. Which to be honest, is a pretty accurate description of my life now, only better.

Woo! Seventh level of hell, baby.

(Although, for the record, I am not violent. Just occasionally suicidal.)

Also, I missed the vanishing post, but it sounds like you made the right decision.

I think you made a good choice, Niobe.

As to Hell: I'm on the Fifth Level, with the Wrathful and Gloomy emo people. Who knew? Although apparently I also rated pretty high among the Lustful Level Twoers, the Fraudulent and Malicious on Level Eight, and the Treacherous down in sub-basement Level Nine.

It sort of reminds me of being in college: slutting around the bars, tragic, pissed off, and wearing too much eyeliner. Ah, to be twenty for all eternity! (Actually, that's a whole level of hell in itself...)

I saw your previous post and did not have a clearly enough thought out answer in order to comment. I am in the 1st circle of hell which surprised me given the ridiculous questions in that quiz.

I'm with zee with the emo's on the fifth level....

saw it on bloglines - stay away...

I'm on the second level although I'm sure I came out much lower last time I did a similar quiz.

As for the decision, I think it's the right one, hypothetically of course ;).

I'm thinking I shouldn't have taken that quiz...ha ha ha. I might have to re-do it and changes some answers!

Wow, I'm in purgatory. I was rated "extreme" for purgatory, "very high" for limbo, "moderate" for Level 7 - I guess because I have been known to "blaspheme" - and "very low" for all the others.

Hi Niobe, I missed your post and - for some reason - my email is not linking to yours so I can't email you. Oh well, my loss, as I am sure it was - as always - very good reading.

Whatever it is, I hope you are bearing up well.

I think you made the right choice. I hope a better option comes along soon.

PS - I'm a heretic. I'm somehow not surprised.

Is the land of Niobe now subject to sunshine laws and FOIA? I tried to comment on the deleted post, but kept getting error messages. I'm glad you were capable of making a decision without me, though.

Oh, and LEVEL 2. Land of the lusty. Oh, yeah....

6th level - with the heretics

I feel the need to comment on this post even though it was quite some time ago and thoughts and feelings are possibly and probably gone and or forgotten. Nonethe less... You and I share the 8th ring, together. I wonder where I will be in 18 months time. Where are you?
