psds

Despite, or perhaps because of, my mother's strongly held and frequently expressed view that it's barbaric to punch holes in any part of your body, I have -- as they say in the not-exactly-charming accent of the city where I used to live -- psds. I had them done on a trip to the mall when I was thirteen, but I don't think my mother even noticed.

I also have a second piercing in my right ear. I got that one while I was living in Grenoble, working as an au pair. One night, at a club, I admired a girl with a blonde buzz cut whose ears were studded with crescents of pearls. When I got home, I took a bag of petits pois from the family's freezer, held it next to my ear and ran a needle through my earlobe. It didn't hurt a bit.

I used to make earrings for myself out of rubber and plastic toy animals or wear mismatched sets that hung almost to my shoulders. These days, though, I limit myself to the tiny sparkly kind. If you don't look twice, you probably won't see them at all.

How many piercings do you have and (if you feel like sharing) where are they?

Edited to add: a link to an ebay listing, so you all can see exactly what my earrings look like. If for some reason you, y'know, care.

Edited again to add: For all those confused by PSDS, here are a few hints: (1) It's not an acronym; (2) Think about the topic of this post; (3) Almost every commenter said that she had PSDS; (4) Say the letters out loud. If you're still in the dark, just send me an email and I'll reveal the answer to the mystery.

And edited one more time to add: Okay. I'll make it easier. Just select the chunk of seemingly blank space below and all will become clear

psds = peeahsed eeyahs

(that is, pierced ears pronounced with a very thick Noo Yawk-esque accent)

I have pierced ears in which I rarely put anything because I'm horribly allergic to nickel (pardon bad spelling, if that's the case here) and it is present in so many earrings.

For a long time in the 90s, I had a nose stud. I no longer wear anything there, either.

niobe said...

thailandchani: I have exactly the same nickel allergy. All my earrings are (supposedly) nickel-free, but even so, I can't wear earrings every day.

Oh, is it nickel that's the problem? I get irritated by most earrings so I rarely wear them. Also, I can't sleep in earrings, and I don't like to wear a lot of jewelry that I constantly have to put on/take off/put on/take off.

I did have a nose stud for about six weeks in college.

I've got two holes in each ear. Diamonds are always in the top ones. :o)

I'm allergic to anything but gold or platinum in my ears (my husband LOVES me, hahaha), but I have had my belly button pierced twice. Both times it got horribly infected. Probably because I hadn't yet realized how allergic I was to the stuff.

Needless to say, my belly button is now ring free. My ears, however, are pierced but rarely have anything in them.

(I'm DYING for a nose ring, but am not sure I'd tempt fate here.)

All in my ears - currently 4 - used to be 8, 3 in one ear and 5 in the other. But then I took 4 out for an interview many years ago and never put them back in.

I have 2 sets of wholes in my ears. But it took several tries for my first piercings at 13. Turns out I'm one of the rare ones allergic to GOLD. Yes, that's right, I can ONLY wear those cheap nickel filled ones (actually I wear sterling silver). What does that say? I don't wear anything in my second ear piercing any more. Someday I'd like platinum diamond danglings since I hate to sleep in studs.

In my late 20s my DH and I lived apart for a year during my studies. I surprised him with the navel piercing. But even though that was supposed to be made of the least allergenic metal, it ooozed for the few years I had it. I took it out the first time I was pg. I miss it. It made me feel young and with a sexy secret.

One in each ear. I used to wear a different pair each day, but I've become lazy about it. Once I got a pair of "nickel-free" ones as a gift, and a wonderful infection. So no more of those.

I'd like to have a piercing in my belly button, but before that the should look such that I can actually show it off, and, well, that's not happening.

Two holes in one ear, and three in the other. When I lived in SF, I went with my friend Olivia to a piercing parlour to get our belly buttons one. They quite rightly identified us as tourists in the world of body mod and frightened us away...

I can still get earrings into the second hole in both ears, but the third has grown closed.

At age 10, mom allowed me to get my ears pierced, one per. (jumped on the second one, the right, so they're a bit lopsided.) Then in college, my mom, who still didn't have hers done, clearly wanted to but was waffling. So I struck a deal that I would go get a second in my left ear, if she got hers done, and off we went. Sometimes I just leave a stud in the top one for months at a time, and sometimes, like now, I get into changing it around.

Funny, apparently my 18K gold antique wedding band has some nickel in it: after wearing it for 8 years with no problem, last winter's hormones were too much and I now develop a blistery rash any time I put it on. Bummer.

I had three piercings on one ear, and 2 on the other side. And I wore really crazy long earrings for years and years!

I've let the third one close up, and I hardly ever wear earrings now, but I still can in the two holes on either side.

Have any of you ever tried putting clear nail polish on the posts and backs of earrings that give you allergic reactions? It's worked for me in the past.

My ears are each pierced once. Because of strong allergies I rarely wore earrings. However that has changed. I recently tried (I read it somewhere) putting liquid band*aid on before putting in my earrings. IT WORKS! I can even wear them all day now. No redness, soreness or infection. I wish I knew this earlier. One bad thing is that the liquid band*aid has a very strong smell for an hour or two.

My left eyebrow was pierced but I let it close before Little One came.

One hole in each ear. Though I often go for months without changing them. I'm partial to a hinged pair that kind of wrap around the ear and clip onto themselves. Because, they never ever come off.

And, I had to read the title out loud to figure it out. Funny.

I love claires, I buy everything for LaLa there!

I have two piercings in each ear but wanted more, my mum said no. Then it went out of fashion anyway, so I gave up the idea :)

Mum had the right idea in the end!

My standard ear-holes have closed in the last three years. Didn't mean to, but I was just to tired to put in earrings. Who knew that they could close up after 30 years of being pierced. I had another one in high school that a room mate pierced, but I let that one close after in got infected.

three piercings, all in ears, and one that I did myself. but it DID hurt. ouch.

My Dad always said if God had meant us to wear earrings we would be born with holes in our ears.
Despite his opinions and much to his despair I went through a bit of an extreme piercing phase when I was at Uni. At the height of piercing I had my eyebrow pierced, my nose twice (same nostril though not both sides), my tongue, my belly button, the inside triangle bit of my ear (can't remember what it's called now). Also my right ear pierced twice and my left 5 times (most done myself).
Over the years I've taken them all out, occasionally I wear a pair of earrings but that's it. I now look completely normal (well as normal as I ever look). People are quite shocked when I tell them of my pierced past.

I used to have four but now I have two, I think, barely used. I've gotten so sensitive to metals and dude, if I have tops and bottoms (clothes) on before leaving the house? it's a good day. Accessorizing? Don't remember it, and anyway got out of the habit when it was just one more pain point (i.e., one more way to abuse to mom by yanking on earrings).

I have only one hole in each ear. My mother had them done when I was 6, shortly after she divorced my father. Evidently she had wanted to have my ears pierced when I was toddler, and he was adamantly against it.

As a teenager I wore long, crazy earrings - my favorite were a pair of alligators that hung almost to my shoulders. The mouths of the alligators looked like they were biting my earlobes.

I wear earrings occasionally, only gold or sterling silver, anything else starts to bother me quickly.

Currently, I have three piercings in my right ear and one in my left. My left tragus was pierced, but I let it close up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragus_piercing). I've toyed with the idea of getting the left rook done. I wouldn't go for any other body part (well, maybe if I had a cute belly, but I don't!)

Four in one ear, five in the other. I have gold hoops in most of the holes, or very tiny studs. I tend to forget about them for weeks at a time, and never change them--that's why the hoops. No other piercings, and none in the cartilage.

cinnamon gurl said...

Oh maybe i have that nickle thing too. Anything not total gold and sometimes even gold makes my ear horribly itchy and red. So I just don't bother. But piercing my ear used to be first-choice procrastination method during finals.

I think I had three or four holes in one ear, and I stopped wearing earings in the other ear just to prove that I was a little bit different. Now I only have one small hoop earring in one ear; I think the other holes have filled in.

Just one hole in each ear. But, just so you don't think I am completely boring, my earrings do appear to be with me for eternity now. They are diamond studs and in spite of the protective screw-on backs they came with, both backs on my earrings came off at one time. I still wanted to wear my earrings before getting the backs replaced and so I grabbed two different backs from other earrings that seemed to fit nice and snug. Well... apparently a little too snug. I have never been able to get them off again.

2 in one ear, 3 in the other. They are still open but I only ever use the bottom two. I did the top 3 myself when I was about 14 using an earring stud. I must have no nerve endings in my lobes as it didn't hurt a bit either and I had no ice.

3 in each ear and one in my nose that I took out for a job interview and never put back in. That was during my Ani DiFranco wanna-be lookalike phase.
I don't wear jewelry very often, which is sad because I have some pretty stuff. I just never remember to put it on. I guess that is why I have my wedding ring tatooed on..that way I never forget it.

i'm proud of myself for figuring out "psds" before commenting. it was a close call.

I have one hole in my left ear and two in my right, though the 2nd has nearly grown over. my bffs and i got the 2nd hole in high school for solidarity.

huh, piercings. what a fun idea. haven't thought about body mod in a while.

Yeah, my ear ones have grown over. So I have nothing going on. I do, however, have that same nickel allergy.

I am the most boring one here-- just one in each ear. Done when I was a kid. My first earrings were gold ones my mom wore as a kid. My sister had them after me, but brought them back the weekend Monkey was born. They are waiting for her now. Soon, I think.

I have two piercings, both on the bottom fleshy bit. Always have danglys in the bottom one, and a stud of some form in the top.
my collection of danglys is pretty cool, but my stud selection is a little limited, but I'm fussy about them!
They have to be silver, and of the right size and ....

Haven't figured out what psds means yet and am very confused. Feel kind of stupid.

Navel barbell, three on each ear on the lower, and ... maybe 13 cartilege. When I have all that I "should" have, I have 21 earrings.

And I'm allergic to nickel and pretty much every other metal, for some reason, and have to use titanium, which is a pain in the butt.

I now have just one in each ear, though I rarely wear anything them. About 5 years ago, I had a nose piercing for about 2 years, took it out because I took a second job for awhile, that didn't allow it. I still miss it. I wore a small silver star that laid flat against my nostril. I have thought of getting another one, but honestly, don't want to go through the healing process again. For some reason, my nose took a long time to stop random bleeding from the hole.

5 in the left, 2 in the right, 1 in my tongue. I only wear one pair of earings in my ears now and the barbell in my tongue.

2 piercings in each ear....

And honey, southern people don't say it like psds! ;-)

(That took me a while)

Pierced ears and a cartilage piercing I got at 17. That was my rebellion, LOL.

I have to wear 14k gold or else they get infected. I prefer silver so thank goodness for white gold.

Unknown said...

Unfortunately, I got psds right away. Eeyas.

I have two in the left lobe, one in the right. I had to repoke them as I went without earrings for so long. Now I wear very small hoops constantly.

It took me a while to get PSDS. that's freaking hysterical. i have PSDS too...

I used to have a lip piercing. I still have a little scar. I got an article in my local paper about it (years and years ago) with a picture of my pierced lip. I also used to have a piercing at the top of my ear, but that got infected.

So, in the end, I just have PSDS.

I am only slightly embarrassed to admit just how long it took me to figure out PSDS. Even with the hints...

I have 8 holes total - three in each earlobe, one in the upper cartilage of one ear, and one in my belly button. Although I rarely wear things in any of them, unless I'm getting dressed up for something.

PSDS_it took me a while but I GOT IT!!!

i have three holes in my left ear and two in my right.

i pretty much only wear one pair these matronly days, but i am starting to branch out again. i just need some nice little studs for the top and middle holes.

Caro said...

3 in my right ear and 2 in my left. Also my nose but I hardly ever wear anything in it because the studs always seem to fall out and my belly button.

Dr. Grumbles said...

I had to say PSDS out loud to get it :)

I have PSDS, I once had three holes in each but now I am down to one each. I love dangly earrings.

Wait, are you from Long Island? Is your name actually Vinnie? You are a riot. I have one hole in my left ear and two in my right. I never wear anything in the upper right one though, so I just have the boring old one earring in each ear. I have medium size silver hoops in them that I hardly ever remember to change.

Oh and Claire's is the devil. It's truly the 7th circle of hell in there.
