under the weather

I don't get sick all that often, but yesterday, I left work before noon, went home and straight to bed. Nothing serious, just aches, chills, exhaustion, and that pervasive sense of unreality where thoughts twist into strange shapes and echo inside your head. It would be kind of like an out-of-body experience, if only your body didn't feel quite so awful.

So, I'm lying around, eating popsicles, napping, and wondering whether I have the energy to get up and look for some kind of medication. Any advice? When you've got a cold, what do you find is the most helpful thing you can do for yourself?

Me last week. Bet I gave it to you through the comments, so sorry. Some pain reliever in the a.m. (I had killer headaches upon waking up) and lots of liquids helped immensely, as did just lying around. Feel better.

I find doing nothing works best. Yes I could get up and try and do something, but I just feel rotten while doing it. Have lots of cups of tea (how British of me!), and relax, maybe watch a film you've kept meaning to, but never got round to!

Hot lemonade: juice half a lemon, add water just shy of boiling, and enough honey to make it palatable. I can usually tell I'm on the mend because I don't want it any more.

And sleep, of course, usually with extra pillows to prop up my head and help my sinuses.

I hope you feel better!

Oh no! I have been there - it is no fun at all. I take cold medicine (so that I don't whine about not feeling well) and try to get lots of sleep. But my favorite thing for colds? Zicam. I would never have believed it would work, but the two times I have used it, I have been almost completely better in about 24 hours (you are supposed to start using is as soon as you feel a cold). The time I didn't...I was sick for almost a month.

It might not be quite as effective since you've been under the weather for a day or so, but it might be worth a shot!

Get well soon!

Sorry to hear you're ill. I've been full of cold too, not much fun is it?
My cure, a variation on hot lemonade. Squeeze half a fresh lemon into a mug, add a shot of brandy, top up with just boiled water and then sweeten with honey.
I have no idea if it actually helps but it is soothing, and the brandy helps to make everything feel warm and fuzzy.

Oh, yuck, I am sorry. This was me a couple weeks ago.
I take Airborne (simple--just dissolve in a glass of cold water) and just rest. Aleeve seems to keep the aches and pains at bay for a good little while too.
Feel better soon!

Sorry you are feeling lousy. Hot sweet black tea alternated with do it yourself Lemsip (parecetomol plus hot lemon juice, water and honey) in conjunction with lying on the sofa covered in a blanket watching old police procedurals whilst people bring me biscuits and otherwise leave me alone is my remedy of choice. Usually I just have to have the drinks and parecetomol and keep on going.

So sorry you're under the weather Niobe. I usually take vitamin C every 4 hours along with hot liquids to "kill" the chills. Once you begin to sweat, it usually means the fever is gone. Grab a good book a ride it out. Feel better!

Advil cold and sinus is my lifesaver. If you were closer, I would make you chicken soup.

chicken soup with lots of garlic, hot salt baths and B6 vitamins to detox (stay in the hot bath until it makes you sweat! I swear by this). I have heard really good things about ZICAM as well, but haven't tried it (yet). Feel better, sleep lots!

A shower does help for a little bit and I'll second the advil or tylenol.
I am a pretty miserable sick person, all I do is complain and wait to feel better.
I hope you feel better soon.

Ah, Niobe. What a bummer.

I found last week when I had the yuck thatt any hot drink helped tremendously. I was sipping on hot apple cider-the warm cups warms you up, the steam clears your head, and the cider made my throat feel MUCH better.

Hope you're well soon!

I'm so sorry you're sick - I hope you feel better soon. I almost never get sick either. When I do, I take Alkaselzter (sp?) cold medicine - the kind that you dissolve in water and drink. This seems to work the best for me - there is a day and a night version. I usually take that for 2 or 3 days/nights and can get rid of something without getting very sick. The day version doesn't make you loopy either - the night version does though, which of course means I love it! Feel better soon!

I was wondering if you were under the weather - it feels like that must be the first skipped posting day in a long time. I've got a cold too, but it's mostly only in the nose and sinuses. I'm heading out this afternoon for strong medicine (original formula Sudafed with the crystal meth ingredient makers, even if I have to stand in line and sign that dumb DEA book).

Otherwise, lots of rest and warm liquids and yes, too much bad daytime TV. Surely TLC has a What Not to Wear marathon coming up?

Hope you feel better soon. I usually try with lots of sleep and tea (green or rooibos). Right now I'm caught in the mix of a cold with sore muscles. Very pleasant. Makes me feel rather silly for exercising yesterday...

Taking a long hot shower, extra vitamins, and then getting into clean jammies, clean sheets and pillows on the bed, and then resting.

Your sheets and comforter etc are likely covered in germs. Get some lovely person to wash them for you, or just change the sheets and clean yourself up.

Seriously, it works.

Sorry your feeling so crap. I hate being sick.
I say take all the drugs you have. Anything with codeine works a treat for me. No one is going to award you for battling through without taking anything so i say, take some good cold and flu tablets and stay in bed!

Hope your better soon.

Now into day three of my own cold, I'm finding copious amounts of tea, Air.borne, cough syrup, Day.Quil and N.Quil are getting me through the worst of it ... here's to feeling better and soon!

I am not a fan of medication at all, and for a cold especially. Home made chicken soup and lots of tea is my preference. And maybe some oranges or clementines.
Hope you feel better soon. In time for whatever rollicking good time you must have planned for New Year's. :)

So sorry you are sick! icky.
I have a concoction that my old college roomate's little German grandma used to make her and now I make evertime I get sick.

1/2 tsp raw minced ginger
1/2 tsp raw minced garlic
2 tbs lemon juice
1 tbs (or more) honey
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (or as much as you can stand)

dissolve in 8 oz of luke warm water.
Drink quickly and wrap yourself up in a blanket and go to sleep for a few hours

Repeat as needed.

chicken broth is also good.
I love peppermint tea with lemon and honey
steamy showers.

But seriously, the concoction will break a fever (I finally tried it during finals week when I was desperate and woke up an hour and a half later with my fever broken. by the next day, I was feeling well enough to do fairly well on the final)

As a rule, I never take medication because it just alleviates the symptoms without helping kick the actual "bug"

I hope you feel better!

I'm so sorry to hear that you are sick. Unfortunately, I am right there with you.

If I happen to notice the symptoms right away, Zicam actually works. If not (which happens more often) then I try to get as much rest as I can, drink lots of fluids, and take Theraflu at night. It usually makes me drowsy so I can fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.

When the sinuses are involved I find that a decongestant actually does work to help things get better faster.

I hope you are feeling better already.

I'm with Julia - I don't like using medication for a cold. But hot tea with honey (lots of it!) works wonders - even just inhaling the steam off of it. I am partial to Celestial Seasonings Peppermint - wonderful flavor and scent. In lieu of my childhood favorite (seriously, I LOVED Vick's vapor rub as a child), I now dot a small bit of peppermint oil right underneath my nose - helps clear sinuses. Hot steamy showers or breathing in steam off of a pot of boiling water - or using a vaporizers are all good too. These are what my sil, the MD, recommended last week when we were down and out. Oh yes, and rest - and plenty of it. Be well!

sorry to hear that! there is lots of sickness here, too.

take a warm bath and SLEEP.

Running on empty

I hope you are feeling better today - I woke up sick this morning. How the heck did that happen? I never ever get sick. Ugh. I probably shouldn't have said yesterday that I never get sick.

I hope you're feeling better by now!

Sleep is always a good thing in these circumstances.
