perfect way

Cuz I'm still preoccupied with 1985 (Why yes, I am old. Very, very old), the video below was ringing in my head while I took the photo.

What's the first popular song that you can remember that made you feel as if you had mastered a new language that no-one else could possibly understand?

1977: Paradise by the Dashboard Light (Meatloaf)

1979: My Sharona (The Knack)

P.S. You're not that old.

Early on music was not really on my mind. & then holy HECK the Bangles happened. I was a bangle. I mean in my mind. (& ok. in my soul)

To this day if I hear a Bangle song everything must stop so that all can contemplate the magic.

Gee, thanks Katie. Luckily, I still love you anyway.

I can't believe I'm even admitting this because I don't even like him, but Rod Stewart late 70s, e. 80s, stuff like "Young Turks." Gah. I'm so old that I think I thought Scritti Politti was "for the kids." (Say, I think they came through here last year on a tour? And the new album by the front guy that had "beer" in the title was actually pretty good?)

I was into heavy metal back then, so I have to say, Triumph "Magic Power". Excellent song to get stoned too.

Not that I would know anything about that....

New Order--Bizarre Love Triangle or Perfect Kiss.

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know the song in the video. Is that weird? Probably. I also don't know what song I would pick - I just don't remember. I remember what the first two cassette tapes I had were...but I don't remember what that song would be for me.

Probably Genesis, "Land of Confusion." Or possibly "Take On Me" - Aha. First music video I ever saw.

Black by Pearl Jam. Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. I still get surprised when I read the lyrics and realize that I am totally wrong about most of what Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain say in any of their songs.
Meg, I think I love you. Bizarre Love Triangle is the best song. One of my all time favorites to dance to.

Don't know them? Thought I was quite good at 80 music trivia!

Hey grandma, you're sooo old, NOT! You don't look it, that's what counts, K!

I'm sure I have a shoe box full of cassettes somewhere with a bunch of 80 classics and not so classics ;)

Shame I don't have a cassette player!

Meg, Cate: Bizarre Love Triangle is the BEST. I even have a New Order poster in my office.

Elizabeth: Wow. I vividly remember that Aha video -- the pencil sketch that comes to life.

Ok, I think it must be weird that I can't come up with an answer to this question. Not even in the Old Country language. I can remember the things I was listening to when I felt like crap, but I don't think that answers the question as posed.
And reading through the answers I realize that my knowledge of music of the recent decades is also sadly lacking. I could us a history of popular music 101 class, it seems.

When I was in the eighth grade (1985) before we got cable, I used to religiously watch a music video show broadcast on the CBC at 4:30 on Friday afternoons (it was Canada's Top 10 or something) - (living not far from the Canadian border, we could pick up the CBC on our attenna.) So, anyway, the first song that made that lightbulb go off in my head was was from a Canadian band called Platinum Blonde - Crying Over You. I don't think it was ever released in the state, but, I found it on youtube. (I love youtube.) http://youtube.com/watch?v=KCfEAzeLP-w

Definitely anything Madonna's Immaculate Collection - I STILL remember ALL the words from ALL the songs. Quite sad really.

Mine goes back to the 1970s so I'll shut up now.

In my reader? Four posts in a row...all 80s flashbacks. LOL

Mmmm, I'm with Meg. New Order, "Bizarre Love Triangle."

(Yeah, shut UP. I'm not even lying about that.)

Modern English- I Melt With You (You remember, "I'll stop the world and melt with you...) Loved that song.

Billy Joel: Summer Highland Falls (They say that these are not the best of times, but they're the only times I've ever known...) and of course Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

I was a pretty angsty kid. I must have heard Pink Floyd's The Final Cut on the radio for the first time in about 1990. I dropped what I was doing, went down to the local record store and immediately purchased the tape, which I proceeded to play until the thing damn near wore out.

It wasn't popular (like many of the songs mentioned here that I also love especially "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Take On Me"), but the early Cure stuff I discovered in high school blew my sock off. Especially "Letters to M" (I think that's what it was called).

And it didn't have anything to do with my crush and the boy who introduced me to that cure going off to college. Really.

Also, I will never forget the first music video I saw: R.E.M.'s "Fall On Me".
