first green: a dissenting opinion

I've always been convinced that that poem is wrong. The first green is red.

And, on a related matter, please vote in the poll below.

I always thought the first green was purple (crocus) or yellow (forsythia) but maybe that's just where I live? The red buds are only now visible, and some cherries are in bloom already.

Spring has most certainly sprung down here. My allergy-tickled nose feels it for sure.

This poem, while one of my favorites, has always been very sad for me.

Good point.

I'm not sure I'd recognize spring if it bit me on the ass.

It started in earnest four weeks ago here, but I'm in the lovely Bay area so we're seriously spoiled when it comes to weather -- and yes, the buds do start red!

Green, blue, red, yellow, orange..I don't care what colour spring is as long as it's not white or grey.

I just wish it'd get here already.

It's like 30 degrees out today. It does not feel like spring.

Though there are some crocuses up.

I'm a little puzzled by this whole spring thing, it seems to have got lost in the UK. My view out of the living room window bow looks identical to the one I had in December!
As for the last week I can safely say that spring is still m.i.a. in France, I have never been so cold!
Next week will be spent in Bulgaria skiing so I sincerely hope spring hasn't arrived there!

My 14 year old niece was working today on an assignment to analyze that poem.

There are some beautiful weeping willows I pass daily which are golden yellow, but otherwise, I agree that the first signs here are usually red breasts and red buds. You have to glance at certain angle to catch their secret, but I have seen it.

Just to make you all jealous, here in Alabama, the flowers have already bloomed and are dropping as the new leaves come through. Gotta love the south...

I just took pictures of all the blooming trees in my yard. But they have already bloomed, dropped their flowers and are sprouting with new green leaves.

Well the snow killed the crocuses so I'm not sure what that says about spring.

I long for spring. Not to tease us, but to come and stay...one day beautiful and the next snowy and cold...

I always used to love the spring.

It seems that we haven't had a real winter down here in years. Though I do love spring, I miss the wind and ice that makes me yearn for it. Of course, last year, winter stopped by for one wicked night in April after everything had bloomed or budded. We had no local peaches, pears, apples, strawberries, hydrangea blooms, or acorns last year. It was a hard year for all animals.

It looks like Christmas around here, so we're a long way from spring. But I'm sure if I trudge through the snow and look closely I might see a bud or two...
