pink or blue

I realize that this is kind of a stretch, but let's use our imaginaaaations and pretend that my only concern about tomorrow morning's ultrasound is what color I'll need to paint the nursery walls.

And, yes, this post reinforces pernicious social constructs of gender and, parenthetically, for several years my son's favorite outfit consisted of a pink tulle tutu festooned with sequins (though I broke his little heart when I refused to buy him a gold lamé bikini) and I've heard the possibly apocryphal story that, pre-1950 or so, the traditional color assignments were reversed, but just play along with me here and vote in the poll below.

Bonus points for suggesting a blog pseudonym -- though I probably won't use it until after the actual, you know, arrival.

Sethra/Morrolan for blog names, just cause I'm reading my favorite series again. :)

Good luck tomorrow!!
Anxiously awaiting your exciting news!

Eurydice?

Magpie said...

Prometheus if it's a boy.
Pandora if it's a girl.

I voted blue, but that's because I like blue better than pink. And my girlie's room is blue.

how funny that it is currently 50/50.

Penelope for a girl.

Penelope is, of course, famous for waiting for her love to return... and I think Penelope has been waiting to be born and join your family

Sisyphus is too sarcastic, isn't it.

I like Pandora a la Magpie.

At the risk of putting my foot in my big mouth, if you give the arrival a nickname, shouldn't your son also have a nickname? You could always go with "Tut", a play on Tutu. Anyway, it'd be hard to give the little one a nickname w/o knowing the coordinates of the older one.

(I'm just making excuses since I obivously had no creativity in mine)

I like Maypole's suggestion - Penelope.
I voted pink for girl, definitely (though mostly voting 'cause I think it is a girl, not necessarily that she needs to be bathed in pink).
Glad to see some enthusiasm building...know it has been hard and a long time coming for you.

DD: I don't know if I talk about my son enough to give him a nickname, but I think I'd call him Gray.

I like the idea of mythological-type names for the other one, though.

I am 100% sure it is a girl. But you must know, I am almost always 100% wrong.

I vote Althea.

I'm seeing pink to, and love the idea of Penelope as a blog name.

I like the name Penelope, as well. Can't wait for your news.

Looking forward to finding out.

Athena, for a girl? And Odysseus for a boy? I'm terrible at suggestions, but what the heck, I'll throw those in since the theme seems to be somewhat mythological.

Niobe--may I ask how old your son is? (You don't have to answer.)

niobe said...

The Nanny: Well, let's just say that the last time he wore that cute little tutu was somewhere around 1997.

I am SO excited that you have this poll here. I mean, lawd, lady- pink or blue!!
I voted blue.
And you can call him Anderson Cooper :)

I voted blue, coz it's my fav color.
blanking on psuedo's right now.

I voted blue, not sure why.

Awake said...

I vote to paint it blue, either way. A soft pale blue is very soothing and peaceful. And I'm not biased at all because that's what our little girl's room is. :)

We'll be waiting to hear...

Meliboea- one of the surviving children of Niobe according to myth.

Some say one made it, some say two made it in the legend.

And it's a girl, I think so that fits.

Perhaps "Elle" for a girl? Or "Hope"? Or "Nadia" (which means hope?) Babycenter.com suggests "Desiree" when I search for a name that means "longed for". But, I think Desiree sounds like a stripper. (And now I have a vision of you hauling around a baby in a bikini and some pasties...er...)

How about "Ben" (son) or "Barnabas" (son of prophecy) for a boy pseudonym?

When the doctor yesterday he said something about pink or blue and we were puzzled for a bit. I guess we aren't standard gender lines parents either.

I do like Eurydice, one wanted and loved so dearly you would brave the Underworld to have her with you.

abiding with you, even though the pink/blue thing probably has yer mind utterly consumed. ;)

i'm hopeless at guessing gender, but i do like Eurydice.

For what it's worth, my girl's room is blue (well, periwinkle).

Best wishes!

I voted boy.

I think 'Dante' considering you have gone through hell to get him.

The Nanny said...

Oooh, I think Topcat has a great suggestion. I second Dante.

I am not imaginative. So instead, I will cross my fingers and toes and anything else you would like me to that there is nothing but good news tomorrow.

Julia said...

Would you believe it-- I really don't have a prediction. But I do like all the mythology-oriented nicknames.

Anonymous said...

I voted blue, just because. I am just hoping for a healthy whatever ... is that too boring at this point?

I can't wait!
I think a girl...whatever color they are using for that nowadays. LOL

Anonymous said...

Oh dear, I LOVE names, but I feel I am in over my head here. And, even though you asked "us," I think that you would come up with a smashing name. So I will remain quiet on that one.

I have all along been thinking "girl" for you, and I am often right on these things, but I have also been wrong a time or two. I will pray, however, for healthy-healthy-healthy if that's okay with you!!

Have some fun tomorrow!!!

I'm going to vote girl. Why not.:-)

And how about Phaedra?

i voted girl. but i really don't have a feeling either way. what niobe isn't your real name??

Furrow said...

OH! OH!! OH!!!! I'm so excited. Pink all the way. But, you know, anything is fine.

Furrow said...

And I don't know what to suggest for her as a pseudonym. Pretty much all of the Greek females got a raw deal, usually because of some insecure bastard. I say move on to a more pro-feminine mythology. Maybe something Hopi or Celtic.

Sara said...

I cheated and voted after. As for pseudonyms, I suck at that. I'd pick something entirely random, like Boris or Zeev.
