palinopsia

Palinopsia is a visual disorder caused by misfiring neurons, hallucinogens or trauma, where cascading images persist, like the animated trails behind a cursor.

To get a sense of what it's like, stare at this picture for thirty seconds, then look at a white wall or piece of paper. A ghostly afterimage will appear, the American flag, drifting through space, colors corrected to the familiar red, white and blue.

And, no, this is not a political post. But, if you like, feel free to leave your own thoughts about last night's debate in the comments.

I look up and see . . . stars (the kind you get when vaguely dizzy, not the "twilight's last gleaming" kind) and a white wall. Then again, I'm on coffee #2, and know full well something is misfiring anyway.

Debate: boring. Happens when they decide not to answer the questions and just reply with their canned goodies which we got the last time around. I just (just!) had a discussion with my mother re: Adam Smith and what exactly constitutes a commodity that works effectively in the free market system, so I was really hoping Barry would answer that question about whether health care can be thought of as a commodity straight up. Could've led directly into a thoughtful answer about other failed "commodities" (Enron!) and whether current failures (banking services! Education?) need more thought in this system. Would've been a more interesting evening, certainly. At least for me.

Minor nitpick: I am not John McCain's "friend". If he'd said it one more time, I thought I'd gag.

You are divine. Palinopsia.

I would like the Palin stimulus to disappear.

I thought the debate was boring - but the Momocrat live chat was great.

I don't think I can stare at this long enough to get the flag effect. My eyes already hurt.

You know, your blog IS fun and educational!

I don't talk politics. I rank it right up there with having a conversation about embarrassing medical issues. Messy and impolite.

I fell asleep during the debate. They won't change my mind about who to vote for, they were boring, the questions were obviously planted. Didn't it seem like they were reading them for the first time? If anything SNL now has more material.

I missed it - work kept me occupied.

Bill Maher and Jon Stewart will tell me what to think about it later.

I felt like my eyes started buzzing as soon as I looked at the flag.

I was able only to listen to the debate due to a class meeting, but it sounds like I really didn't miss anything.

Groovy.
The debate was painfully boring in my opinion. I seriously couldn't watch more than half.

the debate made me regret that america has been so dumbed down. the debate lacked and real converstation; it wasn't a debate. what did they debate?it contained only a one liners and subtle insults.
