an open letter to my readers

Dear commenters:

You know I love you all and treasure each and every one of your comments like the precious jewels that they are. But, frankly, a few of the responses to my last post left me just a smidge puzzled.

So, can someone please enlighten me as to what exactly would be the rationale for commenting anonymously to tell me your freakin shoe size??

Just wondering.

hugs n kisses,
niobe

Ashamed of their feet? No clue really. Or maybe they think you are part of the secret shoe CIA and you're going to find out where they live by doing a backwards look up of their shoe size and then... hmm that's all I got.

I'm so ashamed of my feet that I couldn't even bring myself to comment anonymously. Some things just run too deep Niobe.

Ha!

Perhaps some people see their shoe size as too identifying. . .

Tee hee! That's pretty funny.

That is just, well, hilarious!

Clearly a foot scandal. I'd check stats for that address if I were you.

don't you realize that the internet is FOREVER?!? heavens to betsy, lady.

Because, niobe. OBVIOUSLY, woman.

Niobe, Niobe, Niobe. You are SO naive.

Did you really think those people were giving you their REAL shoe sizes? Didn't you get a little bit suspicious when so many of them claimed their "shoe size" was "9" or "10" "wide"? Riiiiight.

anonymous@9:05. I'm sorry to say that it's people like you who ruin the internet for the rest of us. I personally know someone who had coffee with all of the anonymouses. And brought one of those shoe measuring things with her.

Is anonymous only for secrets? I kind of like it for everything. Like catsup. Or if you're me (which you might be...), steak sauce! Nom.

Tash said...

I'm posting anon just for the helluvit.

Tash said...

See, can't even do that right. Good thing I don't spill much on those threads . . . . LIKE YOU THINK MY SHOE SIZE IS SMALL AND WIDE . . . .

They don't want you to know they read your blog, but can't refrain from confessing?

Magpie said...

Because you might correlate shoe size with footprint found at scene of crime and use it to convict someone!

I was gonna comment about the secret g'vermunt database, but I see Azaera beat me to it. I think one's shoe size plus the IP address may really be all they need to identify you.

And just because I missed confessing yesterday, I am up to 7W now, following the last pregnancy. Which is actually much easier to shop for than my old 6W-- many more chains carry Ws starting at 7. The only bad thing is that however many 6Ws I still own in nice/dressy/rarely worn shoes, are too small now. Gonna be an expense... hopefully staggered on the as-needed basis.

Magpie used an exclamation point! I'll bet she meant to make that anonymous.

Now they are anonymously mentioning condiments for goodness sakes! Poor Niobe. It's gettin' messy.

Would it be okay if I say that I love you, Niobe? You crack me up.

I wondered about that myself. Then I assumed that they were slightly paranoid, like my husband, or clicked the wrong button.

Anyway, I hear it's your birthday tomorrow...Happy Birthday to You!

Does anyone remember the line in Steel Magnolia's when Dolly Parton says " I wear a size 7 but an 8 felt so good I bought a 9'? Cracks me up every time.

Im thinking maybe I should have posted under anon as now I may get messages asking me 'if its true what they say about men with big feet'?? (A question my husband gets asked ALL the time). Scott's answer to this is 'Yes, they have big shoes'!!!

I'm not sure what the whole 9 - 10 wide is. In Oz I'm just a normal 10. None of my shoes have anything about wide on them. lol

I commented anonymously on my shoe size... not because I was being secretive, but because I no longer have a blog to sign in with. I should have signed my name, but just didn't think about it.

Thanks, Ashley. :)

It's not that I mind -- I just thought it was kinda funny particularly in light of some of the back and forth in previous comments about the virtues and vices of anonymity.

Jen said...

Because I'm uncool and don't have a blog.

Wait, I guess I could use the name/URL option. D'oh.

Anonymous said...

I posted my shoe size anonymously because even though I have been reading you for a while, I don't have my own blog and you wouldn't know who I was if I used my name anyway. Commenting makes me nervous, because I don't feel like I am a part of the blogging "club," so doing it anonymously feels safer. Don't worry, I won't do it again. Comment, I mean.

niobe said...

Jen and Anon @1:24: Thanks for letting me know.

I know I'm paranoid, but it crossed my mind that (in light of all the hue and cry about anonymity -- is it a good thing or not?) that someone was pulling my leg by posting anonymously on an totally innocuous topic.

I guess I forget sometimes that there are people out there who don't have blogs. Anyway, obviously, you shouldn't comment if you don't feel comfortable doing so. But if you change your mind, I'd welcome your contributions -- with a name attached or without.

I'm guessing because they didn't want anyone to know they were bored enough to be commenting on a blog post about shoe size.

Alexicographer said...

Er, should it be we who are wondering why you want to know (with identifiers!) what our shoe sizes are?

No, I jest, I jest, I know you already know!

Which Box said...

I think blogger remembers the last way you posted so it becomes default.

Maybe with all the tru confessionz and utter speculation people are paranoid they'll forget when it matters so sticking with anon?

I prefer mayo. Mine are 9 1/2's, or 10's. I think my feet are getting bigger as I age. As opposed to as I deage.

Anyway. The answer is data mining and identity aggregation. It can be done using IP address alone though so the little radio button isn't really much protection. Might as well let it all hang out, eh?

On another note: Funny. I dont' know my underwear size even though I wear panties more often than I wear shoes.
