first things first

first cut
Somehow this wasn't exactly the result I was expecting. First, that everything looks fine. And second, that it really looks like it's a, y'know, XX. I mean, it's all good. Very, very good, even. But, as they say, still.

I'm not going to think about that right now, though, and, instead, I'm going to concentrate on something simple and concrete. Namely (I so crack myself up), it occurs to me that she'll probably need a pseudonym.

Since I have kind of a color theme going with Gray and Cole, I decided that I should follow the path of least resistance and continue along that route. Which turns out to be far easier than one might have thought, since just a few moments reflection generated the following list of possible blog names for the little one:

  • Scarlett

  • Pearl

  • Rose

  • Willow

  • Ivy

  • Sienna

  • Jade

  • +Ruby (added at the suggestion of several clever commenters)

So, tell me, which, if any, sounds best to you?

And feel more than welcome to offer any other suggestions you might have for at least somewhat color-related names.

Thank you so, so much for all your thoughts and congratulations on the last post. I don't want to get all sentimental or anything, but they really mean the world to me. Also.

I like Scarlett.

Also, though it's not on the list: Ruby.

Is anyone else sensing a theme here in my response?

Huh.

Congrats, Niobe, congrats!

I missed the post yesterday, so let me start by saying...Yippee! Excellent news!

The names...well, my baby who was born this summer was nearly an Ivy or a Willow, for real, not a psudonym. But she died before she was born, and she is Sierra Rose (and Sierra is pretty close to Sienna). So I share your taste in names, maybe? (Or these are names you'd never, ever use as a real name and you think I'm nuts!)

But anyway, for your baby, for the purposes of a blog name, I vote for Jade, because of its obvious similarities to Gray and Cole, because it is less common than Rose, and because it's one of my favorite colors. Also, the stone jade is supposed to have healing and protective properties, if you believe in such things.

Ivy is my daughter's name (I've followed an earthy tone for names as well) but I love Pearl and Ruby as well, though I don't see it there.
I'm glad everyhting seems well..

I like Scarlett too - guess there was too much Gone With The Wind in my household as a child.

I vote against Ivy, due to the clinging and poison factors.

But, if you would prefer to revise your theme to weather descriptions (which I think is equally applicable), she could be Sunny.

Willow is such a pretty moniker - and gives off the same impression as Gray and Cole do (gentle, strong, warm).

Congratulations, Niobe. I don't know you, other than via your blog, but my heart soared when I saw yesterday's post. Not because Willow-rather-than-[boy name], but because this is full circle for you and your family. This little girl, this daughter, this sister is so loved already, with a chair waiting for her.

Ruby sounds excellent to me.

Your photo seems vaguely risque, or is that just me?

niobe said...

@magpie: Um. I did hesitate for a moment before posting the picture. Then I thought: don't be silly. No one else's mind is going to go there

Guess I was wrong. ;)

Oooh...Scarlettt. Love her. It.

Amelie said...

I like Ruby and Willow. And, actually, I'm amazed that she already gets a pseudonym - in a good way.

Julia said...

I'm with Amelie on the amazed. I was gonna keep my mouth shut, but since she said it, I'm going there too.

Perl is my mother's Hebrew name, so I'm voting for that. Although I see I am outvoted by a mile and a half so far.

And I think the only reason my mind didn't go where magpie's went is that I saw the subject up close and very personal... by which I mean YUM!

I like Jade & Willow - so far I am 2 for 2 on your gender polls :)... good at guessing I suppose

I have two girls of my own, 7 & 11. It is both lovely & challenging at times, but I'm sure that is true regardless of gender. I am very excited for you that things are going well.

niobe said...

@amelie @julia: Well, I wasn't planning to actually *use* it until some time in, let's say, April. I am so not into pre-birth names. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Woohoo! A new adventure. I've always been partial to Scarlett

I like Ruby!!!
& holy shit!! pink!
wow.

so excited for you.

I like Scarlett.

The photo made me do a double take as well.

Found you through Bluebird, and like the two of you I also have had some unexpected feelings regarding gender over the last few months. I have a girl, had a boy that died, and am now expecting a girl. A perfect girl who I can't wait to meet. But still.. so many emotions that I can't quite put words to.

Ruby popped into my head before I even saw the list, but Pearl seems really right, somehow.

jill said...

My vote is for Ivy - I think it goes well with the other two names :)

Clarabella said...

Pearl.

Tigger said...

My vote? Jade. Or Ivy. They're just so pretty! And Jade goes well with Gray and Cole, I think.

Mrs. Spit said...

My grandmother was a violet. I've always loved that name.

SouthernGal said...

I somehow missed the announcement post (too much early T'giving cheer?) but I am beyond thrilled for you! I'm casting a vote for Ruby, just because.

I didn't have a chance to respond yesterday. Mazel Tov on the healthy baby and a double mazel tov on the fact that it's a wee XX!

For what it's worth, I like Willow...but that's just me.

erica said...

I'm in love with Ivy, but there's something sweet and timeless about Rose, too.

Meg said...

I like Jade. Congrats on the good news!

Trish said...

I like Scarlett. It reminds me of Gone With the Wind, which reminds me of childhood, which was a time when I really could just worry about it tomorrow. Of course, I would totally hate to not have electricity and have to wear those ridiculous hoop skirts all the time, but I still liked the movie as a child.

The Nanny said...

Pearl is one of my very favorite names. But for you...I vote Willow. It's lovely and peaceful.

Clementine said...

A baby girl! I vote for Pearl.

Jen said...

I like Ruby, Scarlet with one t, maybe Jade as a pseudonym. There's also the old fashioned Opal and even more old fashioned Beryl. For other stone names, there's Coral, Crystal, Jewel, Chantal, or even Griselda (gravel or stone). Esmerelda, Gemma, Cordula (sea jewel), Topaz, Jetta (stone from Gagai)

http://www.thinkbabynames.com/search/0/stone

congrats on team lavender (sorry, I have a pink bias)

Jen said...

Wait, are you going for color names or stone names?

Ooh, also forgot Opal. Amber. For color names, there's Azure, Hyacinth, Mauve, Saffron, Tawny (possibly too um, dancerish?), Honey, Marigold, Poppy, Violet, Daffodil. Heather. Lilac.

Ok, I'm stretched out.

leanne said...

I'm torn between Scarlett and Willow. Though I think, somehow, Willow seems to be a better fit.

moplans said...

I like Scarlett but Rose is more in keeping with the four letter name theme.

congratulations!!

Christine said...

PEARL!!!

pretty please

after iris said...

Another vote for Pearl.

Betty M said...

Willow gets my vote.

Elizabeth said...

Pearl or Rose complement the other two pseudonyms the best, to my mind.

Chris said...

Congratulations. Those are really good news!! I am very happy for you.

Pearl, jade, or opal.

Which Box said...

I went there too. Anyway, to match cole and gray I like jade. Strong one syllable. Though a darker color could fit better.

Rachel said...

Gray & Cole are shade of gray but I can't think of a gray color in a girl's name. I like Jade or Ruby the best.

elli said...

Violet.

It's edgier. The others are all so ... eh, relentlessly girl-pink-girl/well-behaved/not a toe out of line sorts of names.

Also, purple blends better with the black and gray theme you've got going with your sons.

elli said...

Oh, wait: how about Dove?

Clare said...

Of your suggestions I think Jade goes best with Gray and Cole.

I would also add Olive or Sage. or Violet.

and for a girly-girl, Petal or Lotus. or Peach.

and huge congrats for everything being so excellent and also for PINK.

Me thinks 'Niobe does Pink' will be good and funny future reading...

Maybe she'll grow a pair in the next few weeks.

If not, hopefully she'll be as groovy as her mother.

Andrea said...

OK I was all about Pearl (Perl was an interesting spelling) what with the similarities in color and the way it sounded: Gray, Cole, and Pearl. BUT then someone said Sage. And that is it. Sage-- I think that is just perfect-- in both sentiment and color.

(*sings* parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme...)

Gray, Cole, and Sage.

(delurking btw CONGRATS!)

Stephanie Jean-Louis said...

I cast my vote for Violet or Scarlett or Sage. Congrats on all of the good news!

Virginia said...

I think you would do well with Scarlett. Niobe & Scarlett - it just "fits," at least for me.

Willow

Molly said...

wow, a girl. cool.

i vote jade or ruby.

Jayme said...

Jade. Or Rose, but I like Jade better, being my daughter's middle name :)

Plus it's four letters and one syllable like the others.

Mmm chocolate cake.

Anonymous said...

Pearl. I like it best with Gray and Cole.

Bon said...

i like Pearl & Ivy. i like Ruby too, but you don't strike me as a Ruby sort.

i also like Violet for your blog-girl.

whatever you call her, huge congratulations and good thoughts.

Panamahat said...

Too many wonderful choices! Ruby, Violet, and willow my top three. Congratulations!

debbie said...

what about olivia (sort of like the color olive).
or scarlett

Meim said...

I vote for Jade. Not only is it beautiful, but after a quick google search, this is the info I found about Jade. I think it mythology is beautiful.

http://www.cedarseed.com/air/jade.html

Jen said...

On the tree front, there are Alona (oak tree), Aspen, Cassia, Cherry, Daphne (laurel tree with bonus mythology aspect), Dara (oak tree), Eila, Geneva (juniper tree), Hazel, Holly, Idra (fig tree), Ilana (tree), Laurel, Linea (lime or linden tree), Livia, Orinthia (pine tree), Rowan, Sequoia, stockard (tree stump, maybe not the best connotation), Wilda, and the popular Willow.

If you can get over the Scooby Doo thing, I like Daphne, Alona, Dara, and Rowan from these name lists.

www.thinkbabynames.com has awesome info and variants on most any name. you can do searvhes on themes easily - stone names, jewel names, color names, tree names, the list goes on.

Congrats! I'm so happy for you!

FWIW, I like Jade, Scarlett, and Violet for pseudonyms. They just have an edge to them that seems more in line with your personality. Jade fits with the one syllable theme. Scarlett just rocks. And Violet--well, I have both a cousin and a niece named Violet and they're cool little characters.

A simple being said...

really mini me?

i like willow it was one that i fought hard to use but i was kicked out, i like willow becasue is bends but doesn't break

Maybe I didn't understand anything from your blog, but even, not Rose.
I very much like Pearl, sounds feminine and delicate to me, like Audrey Hepburn (if it's your cup of tea, that is!)
I haven't had internet acces for the last month, so, oh, dear me, I witness magic happening! But, let's wait for April!

I think she is Scarlett. :o)

Very happy news, Niobe. I'm thrilled for you.

I like Pearl, very Nathaniel Hawthorne, and it seems to fit with you. And Willow is very nice.

My vote is for Ivy or Pearl.

Though I don't believe you can go wrong with any of the names you posted - they're all lovely.
