night and day

hands and feet
Cole has been (knock wood) almost preternaturally reliable about sleeping -- down by 7:00, up at 5:30. Which is a tiny bit earlier than I like on the morning end, but not bad at all, since I've always been very much an early-to-bed-early-to-rise type.

In college, when everyone else's evening was just getting started, I'd put my head under the covers and drift off to sleep listening to the comforting hum of voices and music. In the morning, while my roommates were still in bed, I'd be the first one in the dining hall, drinking coffee at the one of the enormous oak tables, reciting lists of German verbs -- schlafen, schlief, hat geschlafen. I knew that upstairs, across the hallway, in the dorm on the other side of the street, in every room, in every bed, there were people sleeping. And I don't think I've ever felt less lonely or less alone.

What about you -- lark or night owl?

I worked as a waitress and bartender for years and was a night owl for many years after.

Now that we have a child, I have gradually made the shift to early bird.

For the first year, I was miserable when I was up in the early morning. Now staying up past midnight is rare.

I've always been a night owl. My productivity streak hits in the middle of the day. If the regular workday was from noon to 8pm, I believe that I would get an insane amount of work done and would be less-inclined to procrastinate.

Early bird. Always have been.

Early bird for sure. I'm terrible at staying up late. And I'm not very good about sleeping in -- I feel like I'm wasting the best part of the day. I love quiet mornings. I also love breakfast.

Early bird getting the worm. Can't usually stay up past 9, which means I should be in bed NOW! G'night!

Night owl. Until the end of time. I've always said the 2nd shift is perfect for me, but I've never worked it. Even having a child has not effected my need to stay up until the wee hours of the morning. Now, I just sleep more during the day.
I have learned that I will never, ever *do* mornings.

Night owl. I can't function until noon. I get out of bed to get the kids off to school, and then I convince the ones still at home we need a nap after breakfast LOL

Adaptable to everything except the midnight shift...though my tendency runs to early bird. My daughter is definitely an early bird...although she can be encouraged to sleep past 7. Sometimes. But then, I'm up by 6:30 and wondering why she's still asleep...

A tweener?? Up by 7:30- 8 but in bed by 10:30- 11pm.

Man, I'm boring! Oh, well :)

Nightowl ALL THE WAY. If I have to be up early for work or when I've had babies about I adapt to it okay, but my circadian rhythm seems preset for sleep between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. if I have any choice in the matter.

Nigh owl, and my girl is also!

I hate getting up before noon. Well I used to hate it. My early risers have broken me of that. oh boy was it painful...

I am a definite night owl!

I am a total night owl. However, my job doesn't really allow me to be one, so I always have to make major adjustments after a break from work. In my one week off for Thanksgiving I had started going to bed around midnight and sleeping until about 9 (which is when my girls typically woke up over break). Even my girls are turning into night owls. Of course, hubby is a night owl too, so I guess they get it from both of us!

I used to be an early bird until my twenties. But my husband and later my son have completely turned my sleeping habits upside down. Judging from the previous comments I am a rare species: a person that was turned into a night owl by her kid (he always slept in long even as a baby and a toddler). And I really need my late nights now, when I have time for myself to read (luckily I do not need all too much sleep).
Speaking about German: isn't it funny that "sleeping in" translates into "ausschlafen" (sleeping out)?

Mornings are my best time. It was that way in college, too - my best classes were the 8am ones, when most of my classmates either came in pajamas or not at all.

I can count on one hand the number of times I stayed awake past 1am, even then. And I ALWAYS felt awful the next day for it.

Neither, really. I'm best in the afternoon and evening, which is quite unfortunate for my employers, since I work two and a half 1st shifts and two 3rd shifts a week. It's a lot easier for me to work 3rd shift than 1st, though.

I can do either. I can even do both, but not for long periods of time. And the funny thing is, I like both, as long as I am up doing something I enjoy...

Lark. I can barely stay up past 11 and I'm just into my 20s. Embarrassing.

Night owl, as hard as I try to change my habits. And, both of my children (adults) are, as well. But we are great nappers - anytime, anyplace - and great sleeper-inners (if that is a word).

Night owl. When the kids where home in the summer all of us would be up all night until 4 or 5 am, which drove my husband nuts to see all of us just going to bed as he was heading off to work. Now I set my alarm for 7 am and force myself up.

I'm a total night owl. Would stay up till 2 or 3am every night if I could. But, gotta get up and get the kids to school, so I stay up till around midnight and drag myself up in the morning. If it were up to me, I'd stay up till 3 and get up around noon or later. Ahhh, that's the life! ;)

Night Owl who tries to be a lark.

What is that photo of? (I'm too tired to correct that sentence.)
It's lovely.

Owl. I'd like to be a lark, but it's not to be.

I have a fifteen-month-old who until about a month ago reliably woke up at seven each morning. Now he sleeps until eight. I'm pretty sure he's destined to be an owl, just like Mommy and Daddy.

Nightowl.
I am terrible at saying no, so my days often fill up with obligations and distractions. When the world is dark and the phone stops ringing I can finally get some work done.
Oldest daughter is a nightowl.
Youngest daughter is an early bird ~up at 5ish.

@Emily: The photo was taken through a store window (hence the dusty lines) and is of a few abandoned mannequins in a closed-for-the-season store on the boardwalk of a summer town on the Jersey shore. Thanks for the kind words!

Early bird but I wasn't always.

i'm like julia -- i can be either, or both.

well, i guess i'm an early bird either way, as i rarely if ever sleep in, but i can be a night owl and an early bird for semi-prolonged periods, though less and less prolonged the older i get.

lark. lark lark lark. although i don't like getting up super early, it is much MUCH easier for me to get up early than it is to stay up late. and i'm in a much better mood. :)

I'm a night owl at heart but life with kids has made that a bit less appealing as a late night usually involves thermometers and something that rhymes with comet...

But I have come to love the early mornings, when no one else is awake and I can just sit and have the day all to myself for a bit.

Sleeping thru the nite...yummy:)

lark lark lark. all through high school, i went to sleep at 9 and woke up at 6 (my parents were on that schedule, more or less). in college, i experimented with later, but at heart i am a morning person. i try to fill my afternoons with social, less-thought-intensive tasks because i am just not as lively and sharp then and can use energy from others.

my younger son is also a devoted early riser, though, and it is starting to wear on me. even though 5:30 isn't necessarily much earlier than i'd get up, i like the option of sleeping later. the relentlessness of it is getting to me. that's from being an entp (myers briggs), which i think you may already have covered? or am i thinking of another blog?

definitely early bird. i used to love working 6-2 in the hospital because i'd get up at 4:30. i am usually never up beyond 9-10pm. my kids go to bed at 8:30pm and get up about 8:30am. nice because it gives me time to myself in the morning to do laundry, dishes, enjoy a pot of coffee before they wake up.

Um neither? But if I had to choose, I'd say early bird. I like going to bed early and getting up relatively early. I cannot for the life of me get up early enough to shower and give myself decent time to get ready. So, I do as much as I can the night before.

Neither, really, though I aspire to lark status. I do go to bed early, but I don't mind at all sleeping in until the sun has well risen.
