because i get this one a lot

It's Ny-oh-bee (rhymes with Nairobi)

NOT Ny-obe (rhymes with microbe*)

If you had to choose a new nom de plume (or, depending on how you conceptualize these things, nom de guerre), what would you pick?

*Be sure to click on microbe to find the perfect gift for your under-the-weather friends.

good to know.

I am fine with my fake name. But if I had to do it over again I might have researched better. Maybe borrowed from an old film star or something. I've had this fake blog name for over two years and only just realized that it is a name of a crazy lady on a soap opera. oh well. That'll do.

I did ask so I know how to now.

As for me? Hmmm, no idea really. I wouldn't use my real name since lots of people IRL would match me up with the blog, but maybe a cartoon character?

p.s. I would love to see your photos in the photofriday group. I posted about that today & think you would be an amazing addition.

That's funny! It never crossed my mind to pronounce it without a long e at the end.

I love the clever and punny names but I can never think of them and the thought of trying to come up with something clever exhausts me... I'm pretty happy with my nom de plume... you?

Hee. How on earth did you find out people were pronouncing it wrongly? (and oddly, I never thought to pronounce it that way, like microbe, but then again I'm a "Rome" fan). As for me, no idea. My name gets butchered enough as it is, hard to think of trying out another.

Ugly Betty.

She's my favorite character right now.

I recently found out that an online-friend I have "known" for at least 2 years pronounced her name differently than I'd been saying it in my head. It was like having to learn a whole new person! I would chose the name Ariadne.

Possibly Nefertiti because every time I say it I laugh. My Mum once taught a girl who was desperate to play Nefertiti in the school play, and wouldn't stop asking my Mum. She also had a Birmingham accent and it's just one of those words that sounds hilarious in a Brummie accent, I can still hear exactly how she used to say it.

Don't people watch the Matrix? Of course that is how you pronounce it.
My nom de plume is darwinlaughing.

I chose 'Antigone'.

I am very jealous of your extremely-cool blog name, because I don't even really have one. At the same time, I feel such a rush of recognition whenever I see "B&P" that I feel like I can't actually replace it, even though it's a name that makes no sense (as it applies to me). I took suggestions awhile ago for a new name, but my commenters were too divided to be very useful. I did come out of that feeling rather fond of the name Saffron. But it seems like it would be absolutely absurd to just start showing up places commenting under that name now that I've been bubandpie for so long. (And how do you even capitalize that, anyway? I don't even know, and it's my name.)

Aunt Becky said...

Thankfully, I am well versed enough in Greek mythology (thanks 4 years of AP Latin) to say your pen name correctly. Whew.

I guess "Aunt Becky" is somewhat of a nickname, although Becky is my actual name. I'm not clever enough to pick a brand new first name, and besides, I'm fickle and would change it often. But I've often wished my last name were something like "Fang."

It's not.

Rosepetal said...

Sadly I knew it rhymed with Nairobi not because of my extensive Greek education but because of watching the Matrix.... and Rome. My alternative comment is: well at least they got the pronunciation right in the film!

I love your nom de plume.

what's funny is I didn't know what "nairobi" was, so didn't know how to pronounce that one either. But, I had it right so yay for me.

The microbe buddies are awesome. I have a biochemist friend so I think I may need to make a purchase! heh.

I got it right, pat on the ol back pour moi ;)

What would I choose? Alice. I am a sucker for the James family. And for Gertrude Stein.

I had the same question - how in the world did you know that people pronounced it wrong? I never would have thought to pronounce it like microbe. Anyway, I don't know what I would choose.

I love the microbes. And I think I might have pronounced it wrongly -- more German than English, perhaps, but not quite.

I do like the accountability of using my real name. I stick to it, too, even in comments.

However, I did use a pseudonym online at message boards and so forth for a long time.

If I did one now? Cassandra pops into mind quickly; it's an old joke, and yes the mythological one.

I did know how to say Niobe. I also knew how to say Hermione.

But Cinnamon Dolce at Starbucks? The barista corrected me today: Dol-say.

Wha...?!?

Not dol-chay?

Glad to see I imagined your name out loud just the way it's supposed to be. :-)

As for a new nom de plume , I have no idea. So I hope I don't get 'blog outed', because I'd probably have to find one to start over...

Good to know I have been saying it right (in my head, that is)!

It didn't really occur to me not to use my real name when I started down this road. But, if I had it to do over again, maybe Claire? That was my "name" in French class in high school and several of my good friends took to calling me that all the time. I imagine there are still a couple of people that if I were to run into them they would still call me "Claire." Kinda funny, huh?

Have you actually seen those microbes? We have one - they are hysterical. Actually, that is incorrect. Mr. W has one, it is halotosis.

charmedgirl said...

julie pippert: dol-say=spanish, dol-chey=italian. that barista needs to calm down. it means 'sweet' or 'sugary' but also means 'caramel'. not sure if italians also use it to say caramel, that may be a spanish thing...so i guess if your drink was cinnamon caramel, she was technically right, but still...

sorry, niobe. but i pronounced your name correctly in my head!

i like my nom, pretty yet sarcastic. but if anyone thinks of that horrid show, that would make me very sad.

I don't have a nom de plume, but my stripper name would be Misty Dawn.

Mrs. Collins said...

My nom de guerre would definitely be Gen. Malaise.

Beck said...

I've been saying it correctly. Yay, me.
I have gradually come to realize that I wish that I had not used a nickname version of my real name on my blog - I wish that I'd gone with something more anonymous. Too late now.

I'm pretty pleased with Tobacco Brunette, though I get my fair share of users to my site as a result of google search terms like "sex with my brunette secretary." I'm cleaning that up for your comments section, by the way. REALLY cleaining it up.

Thanks, TB for cleaning that one up for me. Well, for me and for any other random stragglers to my comments section.

Mad said...

Hi. Waves. First time commenter.

I like that someone else shortened me to Mad (even though Mad Hatter works given my line of work as a librarian of a research collection in children's lit) and that this same person shortened Cinnamon Gurl to Cin which I then insisted on making into Sin for fear anyone would ever think she was Cindy rather than deliciously sinful.

O.o weird to pronounce it to rhyme with microbe.

I have a nom de plume over at my other blog. It's Rachael. A number of reasons, which I should explain, probably.

moplans said...

I own a whole set of those microbes. So my nom de guerre would have to be geeky.
and lacking in creativity.

but I did know how to pronounce Niobe.

This makes me think of my crazy annoying boss going on about how Hermione's name in the Harry Potter books should be pronouced "Hermee-own" because how would people know to prounouce it the right way?

I sometimes regret choosing a blogger name that is basically, well, my actual name, but now that I've been using it so long I don't want to let it go.
