it's always darkest
As Virgil said in the Aeneid: Perhaps someday we will look back upon these things with joy.* Since Aeneas was -- I think -- referring to a shipwreck, what he's really saying is: however bad things seem to be right now, they can always get worse.
*Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit (for those of you who (like me) find a certain romance, as it were, in words in other languages)
