a bad sign
This morning, I found the severed head of a bird on my porch. The driveway was littered with a trail of feathers.

I think it's a misunderstanding between species, actuallly. A cat was trying to give you a gift.
I agree with Sara- My first thought was, in some culture somewhere that is probably considered a good luck sign. It's all in the perspective. Of course, the bird itself probably did consider it a "bad sign."
My dogs left a partial bird inside my house a couple weeks ago. Since I didn't have my glasses on I interpreted it as a bit of stray fiber--until I leaned down and saw the gore. Perhaps the universe was telling me to clean up my yarn stash? (If you'd been in my house you would know that in fact the universe was definitely telling me that, and to vaccuum up the dog hair while I was at it.)
Sometimes a dead bird is just a dead bird.
Oh my, and people wonder why I like living in the city!
Don't worry. I don't really believe in omens (or, perhaps more appropriately in this case, auspices).
Anyway, I think it was the cat.
