but she didn't say anything about your bike

Never to lie is to have no lock on your door; you are never wholly alone.

Hahahahahah!

What a riot. I hope that it's at least an EXPENSIVE bike.

Someone really likes that bike.
Or maybe that chain doubles as exercise equipment-- biking around with it must be worth some extra calories...

i don't know that lying is necessary...but total honesty is not.
there are things that k doesn't even know about me, and there are experiences that i do not share with anyone...just so that i can have one piece of my life that is *mine.*
are you telling us that you're lying about something?

Great picture, Niobe. Apparenly here people [have to] secure their bikes much more than their motorbikes. Isn't that odd?

Well, I had to laugh at the picture because Mr. G rides, and sadly, it does take that kind of locking up to avoid your bike getting messed with.

As for the quote, I have locks on a lot of doors of things I don't share, but I don't lie, I just don't share. I don't know if I am really interpreting the quote correctly, however.

You are inscrutable.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

A student came into the library a few days ago carrying his bike seat. I suppose that was meant to be a deterrent to thiefs, but it seems that a seat would be one of the less expensive parts to replace if you were a really determined bike thief.

that should probably be "thieves."

so, so tired.

I think this bike would have been just as safe or unsafe with one lock much less two. I am guessing he/she lost the key to one of the locks and had to cut off one chain link. Thus to lock it, they just used another one but that might be way too logical.

Funny. There's a girl at my office who usually locks up her bike downstairs (well, maybe not to THIS extent), but the funny thing is one day she came downstairs to find someone had stolen the seat! Now, imagine the sexual innuendos we were able to dish out as she hopped on that thing to ride it home!

When T and I see precaution that seems excessive we joke about the imagined ten thousand thieves that are lurking just out of sight.

I get the quote. Thank you.

On the quotation: I don't think the author intended it to be enigmatic. I think it was supposed to mean something like lies are sometimes necessary to protect yourself. But perhaps I'm wrong, because I see a spectrum of ambiguities.

I like being alone as much as the next person. Actually, probably much more than the next person. But being "wholly" alone sounds chilling. And while a lock is generally a prudent precaution, if you bar your door with lies, you risk keeping out at least some of the friends and strangers whose visits you would have most welcomed.
