bookshelf laid bare

This is the meme where you slake at least some of our prurient interests by showing us a picture of exactly what it is that you've got on your bookshelves. Don't ask me any questions about the pictured books, though, because I'm almost positive that (as with so many of the gazillions of volumes taking up far too much space everywhere in the house) I haven't read a single one of them. I was going for the close up, color, and cheap irony. When you post pictures of your own books and shelves, other angles, distances and compositions are perfectly acceptable.

I'm tagging Julia, Magpie, Slouching Mom, and Sin, as well as anyone else who feels like playing along. If you're participating, drop a link in the comments, so we can all stop by and gape.

I only buy reference books anymore. You know, birds of the eastern U.S. That sort of thing. As a librarian, I have easy access to most books that I only want to read once.

I don't have a blog for the time being, so I won't be playing along with a photo.

All my books are embarrassing. Like really bad chick novels, or endless books you could predict from me about politics or pregnancy or infertility.

I think that when I'm done with the serious stuff in life, I feel a need to lose myself in a book about something frilly and brainless.

You haven't read that "Crime Photos" book? Damn, I have half a mind to invite myself over just to leaf through that.

Okay.

The next-to-bottom book in the second photo was making me twitch - it was upside down! - until I realized it was in French. What's with the French? Why do they do the spines backwards?

Magpie: Bwhahahah!!!! We have zillions of French books (many of them inherited from L's mother) and their upside down-ness ruins the symmetry of the book shelves. I included one in the photo just to see if it would bother anyone else. Looks like it did.

What happened to your other post? Ah, well.

Hmm... So you didn't rearrange your books at all? Those books were already adjacent to one another?

I'll get on it. Soonish.

And magpie: Oh, those French upside-down spines. They drive me to distraction.

I noticed it too. And I'm slighty bothered :-)

Slouching Mom: No rush. And, while I didn't rearrange the books, I did something kind of similar by selecting certain groups of books to photograph.

All I own are millions of cookbooks and paperback vintage crime novels, which is how you can tell that I'm a dope.

Mmm...the upside-downness of the french title gave me a tingle of familiarity.

I lost most of the books of which I am most proud in a moving incident. As in, my significant other rented a tiny truck and I had to throw them out. A moment of which, incidentally, I am not proud.

My current bookshelf is full of eating-disorder books from 2 years ago and a (perhaps) odd collection of fiction and memoirs. The latter would probably make people wonder if I actually liked to be depressed. People = Mr. LIW.

As for the surrogate, I am glad that she is starting to share information with you. Does she know how much it means to you?

XOXO

I have books with upside down titles too, but I'm not even sure they are in different languages...

Lori tagged me on this one which was funny because I'd read your post and thought -- I'd love to do that...and then it got away from me until she reminded me....

My happy place.

(I adore your blog)
