shade and shadow
No-one's ever accused me of being an optimist, but right now, for no particular reason, the world seems to be colored an unrelenting grey. Anyone have any cheerful, glass-half-full thoughts you could share or a piece of good news, however tiny?
edited to add: Thanks so much, everyone. A lot of the comments made me smile and a few even made me laugh.

Ooh, pick me! I have good news: Yesterday I learned that our child-abusing asshat of a state rep has decided not to run again. That's glass-half-full, right?
I turn 37 today. I have most of my own teeth still and an excuse to eat cupcakes. Wheee!
Happy Birthday, Wabi!
I don't know how much help I'll be, but I can try!
1. I love the pictures you post.
2. When I was walking back from lunch today I saw this insane crowd of people on the street, who turned out to be taping a cheering section for the tv show Nashville Star!
3. When I went to Starbucks, I had to help an Italian woman express to the people what she wanted from them. Ironic, no?
Hope you smiled a tiny bit, and now you can pretty much skip reading my blog today, as there is all the fodder I had, right there in this comment. :)
It's Friday. I can sleep in tomorrow. That's two good things already, for me. (Although I see that, if you're down already, free time might not sound so appealing.)
I have some cheapo glasses, bought on the street type glasses, with yellow lenses. They rather brighten up a dark day. Shall I send them to you?
Whenever I read your blog, I think, "Damn, that Niobe is an amazing person."
A bus didn't hit me when I was out walking and the ground didn't open up and swallow me. Does that count?
And the glass? It's empty.
Let's see, I'll probably need foot surgery, the genetics guy never called back (not a good sign), oh wait, HALF FULL! Ahh. Hmm. I've decided for my (wretched) birthday next week to do Smitten Kitchen's Ding Dong Cake. Just writing that puts a smile on my face.
Happy Birthday, wabi!
I finally have a vehicle with a CD player, so I no longer have to listen to audiobooks by headphone while driving. Thus, the streets are safer. And ...
you rock.
My crazy mother-in-law of no fixed address has finally agreed to take a subsidized apartment, AND one has been arranged for her! She moves Mar. 29. This is HUGE... she's been getting kicked out of housing for years with no notice.
AND - I'm going to Halifax in May for maritime blogher. I've never been to the east coast before and I'm stoked about seeing Mad again.
LP's OT results came back with a big old label we can take to the school system so he can get occupational therapy, lots and lots of it - so he can stop looking for dangerous things to do indoors and get all sensory intergrated - who knows soon he may not hate, hate, hate underwear tags. That'd be big news though, today's news is much smaller - he qualifies!
Cubans are now allowed to own toasters?
I hope you have a technicolor weekend, Niobe.
I know what you mean. I have been feeling all out of sorts myself. I'm going to blame the slowness of the arrival of spring.
Good news...hmmmm...St Patrick's Day is Monday, that makes me crazy happy. Seriusly, it does. I'm all excited to wear green and go to a parade.
I'm so easily amused.
I will work on finding something that actually counts to others as something exciting...and when I do, you'll be the first person I tell!
My new fridge is here!
And my new washer and dryer!
And they rock, seriously most amazing things I've ever seen.
My boss paid me an unsolicited complement on my work, in an email to boot, to easier brag about.
I get to sleep in tomorrow, and I am going to go try to catch a little nap now.
Of course I still have to write two exam questions this weekend, preferably tomorrow, but you asked for half full...
I saw crocus blooming this morning. Next to them hyacinth and daffodils were erupting from the winter dirt.
Wait a sec while I drink half of my mojito . . .
i like quotes, here are some:
*there is nothing so deceptive as an obvious fact.
*everything should be amade as simple as possible, but not simpler.
*don't ask the barber whether you need a haircut.
*a lie told often enough becomes the truth.
*you lose it if you talk about it.
*never give a party if you will be the most interesting person there.
*it is the nature of all greatness not to be exact.
*a man with a watch knows what time it is; a man with two watches is never sure.
*if there is no god, who pops up the next kleenex?
Let's see.... good news...
I've been exercising regularly for 2 weeks now. And my job isn't too bad. Those things are good for me. The exercise and being busy has really lifted my depression.
Other good news? It's starting to stay lighter later.
I found a great pair of shoes while I was away on vacation. New shoes are always good news, aren't they?
The sky has cleared, finally, after a day of rain and the sky is still light at 7:30.
My cat, having wakened with a yawn from her nap by the window sill has come over to lean her grey tortie elbow on my hip, purring.
(Delurking to say that, I too, think your writing and photography is just amazing. Glass-half-full or -half-empty.
Well, it's fixing to be spring, so you can plant some pretty things and watch them grow. That's always fun. And herbs especially, because then you can eat them. Make pesto! And you can start talking more walks; that'll be nice. Maybe go someplace where you can see young animals? Who doesn't get happy around puppies, you know? I'm smiling right now just THINKING about puppies.
Hope things look up soon.
I took my dog to the vet today and he isn't dieing. He just has Giardia.
How about this....I discovered your blog and now have it bookmarked. I check back every so often to read your most recent posts.
Today in the grocery store parking lot, I found $30 folded over with a paper clip. Stuck to it was a bright blue Post-It on which was written an odd, enigma of a note: "Fire is the next." A misquote of "The Fire Next Time"? A sideways reference to money burning a hole in one's pocket, maybe? Well it sure torched my britches; I took that thirty bucks into the store and among other things, bought a relaxer for my hair. I've been looking to' up from the flo' up lately. :o)
I'm finally feeling better and was able to clean my house today. That may not sound like great news, but I do LOVE a clean house.
I just posted a recipe for Irish Cream, fill the glass up however full you want it :-)
Today I got a voucher from the SPCA to get the stray cat I found, well she found me, really, and then proceeded to have 5 kittens on my daughters bed, fixed! Not to have to drop another $300 on vet bills, especially not on the only female in the house who IS capable of successfully reproducing, is defintely half full stuff. But it makes me wonder, how pathetic am I???
I left the house without a coat today. First time in over four months. I swear I smelled spring. Take Care.
The work in our house is almost finished. One of the workers found a Belgian franc from 1967. I saw two friends at the park.
Well...
...hmmm....
Easter is almost here. I heart Easter. And I heart YOU, Niobe.
De-lurking to say: There are 9 inches of new snow on the ski hill 20 minutes from my house, which makes the skiing amazing -- but none of the snow made it down to where I live, so the daffodils which chose to bloom are still doing fine.
no good news as things are kinda gray here, too.
Running on empty
...I've known him 6 weeks....he's already given me more diamonds than my husband did in the last 8 years.
