subtext

I hadn’t spoken to my mother in a couple of months, so I gave her a call to see what she was up to. She sounded exceptionally cheerful as she told me all about her plans to spend this fall driving around the Pacific Northwest in her newly-acquired RV, accompanied by her husband and their large, ill-natured cat.

She told me that she was thinking of starting one of those, you know, blogs. She could write about her trip, kind of like an electronic diary, and then put it on the internet, so friends and family all over the country could read it and even leave comments.

In fact, she was thinking that she might possibly be able to add photographs to her blog. She asked me if I’d ever heard of that and I said that I thought I had. She said she was going to look into it.

I confess I was smirking a little when I hung up the phone. But the more I think about that conversation, the less certain I become about exactly who was playing who.

edited to add: And lest you think I'm being even more irrationally paranoid than usual, remember that it was almost exactly a year ago that L unexpectedly discovered this blog. His reaction: "But Niobe, on your blog you sound so...so...so...nice."

I had the exact same conversation with my mother regarding a blog for her piano club.

I know exactly how you feel.

What was that Poe short story with the beating heat beneath the floor boards?

heh. so you think she might know, eh?

do you think she made the RV up, too?

(grin)

Slouching Mom: I wouldn't put it past her to have invented the entire trip as well. My mother's preferred genre is definitely fiction.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Because, as you've undoubtedly noticed, the apple didn't exactly fall far from the tree.

Interesting conversation with your mom. It makes you wonder how much she knows. I like to delude myself that my parents are too clueless to blog but I guess I shouldn't assume that.

My parents know that I blog, but luckily they are stubbornly old-fashioned and refuse to cope with technology. Unless they're totally lying and have read every gory detail I've put out there for the past goodness knows how many years... Now that's a chilling thought.

That kind of thing can strike fear into one's heart, I know. But I think it's just the zeitgeist. She just read some article in Newsweek. That's all.

PS: I think the apple fell so far from the tree you are actually an orange.

Would she really be so sly about it?

i do see a family resemblance :)

Eek. That would get me thinking, too. But you should probably take it all at face value. And even if you can't, pretend that you do. That's what I did when my husband started quoting comments left on my blog and acted as though they were his own thoughts. Denial. It works.

Who the hell travels with a cat? Never worked for us.

But then again, anytime we are engaged in a secret of sorts it always seems as though everyone else must somehow know. I am sure just the mention of the word "blog" must have made your heart jump a bit.

I'll keep my eye out for that RV- and especially the cat. I'm not a big fan of cats, especially ill-tempered ones.

My mom reads my blog...but that's because I gave her the address. :) There aren't many people I know "in real life" who know about my blog, though, and I'm hoping that using nicknames and stuff will help to keep it that way..

I think your mom might have a history of playing you - for a lifetime - as only moms can do. Don't fall for it. She knows nothing.

My brother and I differed entirely this way. I always, always played it off, he always, always felt like he was trapped into confessing something. I always got away with everything; he got away with nothing.

You're cool.

On a related note, my parent shave a winnebago and travel with their cat. I try not to think about it too much. They are also going to start a blog.

Hmmm.

Well, if she does it, will you share the link?

And, I love Which Box's typo about "shaving the winnebago"...

Hmmm.... "shaving the winnebago." Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Um. my god, that's just what I need, is my parents shaving their winnebago at various campsites around the US. That would just make it all complete.

It's all that spanish moss, you know (they live in the deep south). Though I have to admit the thing comes in handy when storms blow through and they lose power - they just move into the beast (which of course is parked in their side yard) and have TV and AC and the whole bit.

The cat, btw, who they do not shave, hides behind the couch when they are actually driving.

ick. I don't want to know what my parents were shaving.

wheels on the bus, lori: Exactly. Proverbs 28:1 comes irresistably to mind(and by irresistably, I mean: with considerable help from Google) : The wicked flee when no man pursueth.

furrow: They can't leave the enormous and vicious creature at home, because it would maim anyone stupid enough to stop by to feed it.

In fact, my mother says that's why she got the RV in the first place -- so she wouldn't have to leave Kitty all alone.

eva: apples, oranges. I like that analogy.

And here am I worrying because I know who reads / has the address. I don't think she knows, though.

ah... it's that terrifying moment when you wonder if someone has discovered your blog. can you look at your sitemeter or somesuch to see if someone from her area is logging on. That's how I figured out my inlaws are reading mine. they still haven't said anything, even when I prodded them in a post.

woah. furrow's HUSBAND discovered her blog? I did tell my hubby about it, although it took me a few weeks to be brave enough to do that. now, there's no way I could do as much blogging as I do and hide it from him! :) he rarely comments on it in real life, though, so much so that I was certain he never read it, until a couple months ago when he suggested I take something off because if the neighbors found it they might be offended (he was right, but I still haven't taken it off. how bad is that?)

Ruh-oh!
EVERYONE I know reads my blog. EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. My third cousins. My next door neighbour. My fifth grade classmates. God help me.

LOL!!!

I'm always trying to decide if I want people in Real Life to read my blog. I mean, what if I want to say something nasty about them?? LOL!!

Ok now I am just freaking out because people read other people's blogs and pretend that they don't.
COME ON. are you kidding me?
I thought L found yours because it was on your computer? People actually come across the blogs of people they know and don't let on?
hmmm.

My husband told me that he thought blogs were stupid. So I never told him when I started my own.

In fact, none of my family read it, only my friends.

If I knew for sure my husband and/or family would never read it, I'm sure it would be a different blog entirely.

As it stands, though, I'd never say anything about them that I wouldn't say to their faces. How boring of me! ;)
