a single pearl
Well, I finally gave up on the birthstone idea and bought Kyrie a pendant with a single pearl. There are lots of ways in which we're very different, but I know that Kyrie, like me, copes by trying to focus on the future and -- to the extent possible -- avoiding thinking about difficult parts of the past. She's told me that, even though she doesn't think of it as her baby, she can already see that it's going to be a little hard to go home without an extra passenger in the back seat.
So she's concentrating as much as she can on the next steps in her life -- she and Arianna are making plans to buy a house and to try to add to their family in the very near future. A birthstone might be too sentimental. A pearl, really, could mean anything at all.

It sounds perfect, especially given how pearls come to be.
Thinking good things for you in the very near future.
I agree with k@lakly - a pearl is perfect.
I concur-- perfect.
And I keep checking, because, you know...
i am glad you are so open with one another.
Everyone -- I promise, promise, promise that as soon as I hear any actual news, I'll let you know.
We've got an appointment tomorrow morning, but I'm not expecting anything very exciting to happen.
Sounds beautiful. Just right.
That sounds lovely. I think it is a wonderful gesture.
And as a pearl can mean anything at all, it can go with anything at all, too.
Beautiful and perfect.
Now that I think about it, I couldn't imagine anything more perfect.
Waiting with you.
Brilliant, Niobe. Brilliant.
Perfect -- a simple yet elegant token of appreciation for all that she has done, is doing, and will do for you.
Not much longer now. Waiting impatiently with you.
I agree- perfect, perfect, perfect.
I'm waiting impatiently too! I keep thinking that my reader hasn't updated and I've missed something. It's the home stretch now.
I like it. I am sure she will too.
I agree it's perfect. a pearl is so simple and could mean anything, for you or for her.
I'm suddenly struck by the potential sense of loss she'll experience going home alone. I know it isn't the same but I can't help but draw comparisons having returned home alone.
Wonderful idea.
Classic and simple, yet the most elegant "thank you" you could give.
Wow, so close. Exciting!!
i'm biased since the pearl is my birthstone, but more importantly the sentiment is lovely...
The sentiment is lovely, and I am glad for you and her.
I do understand what Antigone wrote, but I know you will be kind and sensitive to that, so I hope it won't be too difficult for her.
as Aurelia said, the sentiment is lovely. What a lovely gift to give to her. I am getting really excited for you my dear. =)
a pearl is lovely (and is MY birthstone, actually) and makes me think about a beautiful thing that grows inside something... a lovely symbol, indeed
i think that is perfect, niobe.
Very fitting indeed, Niobe.
I think I check your blog at least twice a day now...waiting...
I think that's a beautiful idea. :)
Sounds lovely. I am sure she will appreciate it.
We gave our son's birthmother a locket, with a picture of him and of her. I know she still wears it.
Oh, this story you are living, is also in my bones. Oh!
