tidying up
So, I was rummaging through some of my old photos -- the ones I downloaded (um, uploaded? And, yes, I also have a certain amount of trouble distinguishing right from left) to my computer, but never put on my flickr site. The picture above is a shot from our trip to the Vineyard at the very end of last summer.
The whole exercise mostly reminded me of how much I've been wanting a new camera. My rationalization is that my current one is not only old, with limited battery life and memory card capacity, but it's also held together by duct tape, the sad result of my dropping it one too many times. Currently, I'm considering the kinda pricey Nikon D5000. But I'm open to other suggestions, should you want to give any. My one idiosyncratic requirement is that I need a flip-out screen.
Also, I was thinking about tidying up my blogroll and my feed reader. So, if you'd like to be included in either one and you're not already (well, I guess you don't know if you're included on my feed reader, but you can probably figure it out), please leave a comment with a link to your blog.

Keep me please.
JJ and I love our Canon Power Shot G6. A step below professional, but really really good.
Ahh. Mr. Spit was murmuring about the Nikon. I have a powershot SX10IS, which I really like. But, the Nikon takes HD video. . . . And I think more pixels.
No flip screens here. Too susceptible to breakage.
Damn, do I need to tidy.
I bought myself a Nikon D60 for my birthday this year. Sadly, no flip out screen, but for anyone else looking for a camera without such a requirement, I would highly recommend.
And, um, I would love to be included in the blogroll? Forgive me if this sounds silly, and I mean no disrespect, but I don't know if that's possible, as McPolish isn't in the same subject matter as the rest of the blogs. In which case I totally understand if you do not want to include it, and will not be offended.

mcpolish: I'm more than happy to include you on the blogroll -- really, I'm not trying to limit it to blogs with any specific subject matter/
I am a total canon geek...but damn does that Nikon look fab!
(also- if you DO find a fab camera that has everything you need except the lcd hood- you can still get an attachment hood flip device. I think they are called hoodman.)
oooohhh... nikon 5000.
we have the nikon D40, and think it's pretty cool. the 5000 looks awesome
My husband is hankering after a Canon EOS 5 D2.
I am having camera envy. Such camera envy
Betty M: Ooooh. In, you know, my dreams. Sadly, I don't think I can talk myself into buying anything too high end, given my unfortunate propensity (see post) to knock my camera off tables and drop it on sidewalks.
I had to use one of those last year for journalism--they freak the heck out of me, but are REALLY good.
And you're welcome to keep me! (or put me on?)
Just the thought of the D5000 makes me drool! I have a D40, but I am anxious for an upgrade...
No flip out screens for me.
But, here is my blog url http://thefertileinfertile.blogspot.com/ The blog title is Dragondreamer's Lair
I have a D60 and I'm really happy with it. From what I heard, the price of the D5000 is a bit high for what it offers. You'll probably want to invest in lenses as well -- and sadly, you can drop those, too. But they make it even more fun.
I drool over that camera. Sadly, I don't think it is in my near future. I am making due (do? I also have a hard time with left and right.)
Didn't you do the cleaning up thing recently? I remember begging to remain on your blog roll, which I happily do again. And I'd love to be added to your reader, as well. I love having intelligent readers. :)

I can't wait to read the comments on this post because I've been wanting a new camera for a while and can't decide whether or not to get a Nikon or a Canon.
Please keep me!

You know me-- I am in love with the Nikon optics, so I think this is a great pick. :)
I wonder if there's some kind of a shock absorber casing you could buy for your high end camera-- surely you can't be the only person with camera-dropping propensities.
I'd love a spot, thank you.

As far as cameras go, I'd say go with anything Nikon. You really can't go wrong.
i'm de-lurking for just today.
i have no idea about cameras, but could you include grown ups are like that in the blog roll? i know, i know-- i up and all but disappear only to reappear to shamelessly promote my blog. but no one, i mean NO one reads it, and even one or two comments might lift my spirits.

ps--i am reading just being very, very quiet...

One of these days, I will get a nice camera and start taking beautiful pictures. But first I have to figure out how to use my fairly decent camera, actually use it. Hopefully then I can prevent the photographic mementos of the next few years from looking like the last few (picture after picture of our cats in cute sleeping positions).
As a photographer and owner of Nikons and Canons... I'd like to post my opinions:
For point-and-shoot with professionally capable settings, I recommend the Canon G-10. (The G-9 is also great. It's an earlier general of the G-10.) I like this camera because it's compact, durable and has a huge, luxurious 3-inch live-view LCD on the back. It has all the bells and whistles of a pro-digi-cam (priority settings, 3200 ISO boost, full manual settings, etc.) without the removable lenses. There are also other features that might be handy for the creatively challenged like: face recognition, color swap, color selection, as well as settings for: fireworks, snow and beach, plus lots more.) The body of it is made of gun metal (although I wouldn't suggestion dropping it to see if it will still function) and it has the "award winning" CMOS sensor for excellent color and sharpness.
For the accident prone shooter I wouldn't recommend a camera with detachable lenses. Too many things might need repairing if it were to be dropped. You might have light leaks from the lens to camera seal being compromised. It's just not a good idea for the accident prone and it's very costly to repair the camera and lens. You could buy a whole new kit for the price of one repair.
For the pro-am photographer I would strongly recommend the Nikon D90. It has the CMOS censor found in the Canon cameras, live view LCD, face recognition, etc. For my studio I have Nikons. Canon has been known to have proprietary lenses for specific grades of their camera lines. In other words: if you buy Canon A and spend a fortune on various lenses for that camera, in a couple of years Canon is likely to discontinue making your camera (and the lenses), and you'll be left to upgrade all of your gear: camera, lenses, flashes, cords and cables, etc. (That is a slight exaggeration, and Canon may have changed this. So be sure to research for yourself.) All of Nikon's peripherals are universal for all camera grades. I can buy a D50 and in 10 years buy the top-of-the-line Nikon and all of my lenses, flashes and peripherals will all still fit and function as intended. In some cases the Canon lenses will "fit" your camera, but since the rings are of different generations your automatic focus function will be disabled.
I hope some of this helps. If not, at least it sparked a question and more investigation.
Good luck.
Niobe... Please feel free to add my blog to your personal feed reader and the roll.

Just in case it needs a home, I'd take your camera, duct tape or no LOL! I prefer electrical tape myself :-)

love your blog, niobe. even if i don't stop by to comment all that often.
well i know you want a flip out screen, but the canon D series cameras are really nice! much more user friendly than the nikons!

I have some serious tidying up to do both in my actual house and in my bloggy homeworld.

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera Almost 100% satisfied.
Fantastic camera for the Money! Everything in one Pkg. It does
Esta is almost perfect. I am not going to add much to what other reviewers have said: I agree with all the positive points (battery usage, easy to contain, big lenses that adapt to almost nothing, not too much weight to shoot but at the same time, feels solid, easy-to-use, the rotation of the LCD screen, etc.).
